India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, has set a new benchmark for Indian bowlers in the latest ICC rankings, surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin’s all-time highest rating points. Bumrah reached 907 rating points, edging past Ashwin’s previous best of 904, which he achieved in December 2016.
This achievement is also a personal success for Bumrah but positions him jointly on the 17th place list of bowlers all-time tied with Derek Underwood from England.
Bumrah had previously matched Ashwin’s tally of 904 rating points ahead of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). But what helped Bumrah push himself further as the No. 1 Test bowler in the world was the fact that he took nine wickets during the Test despite India losing the game.
Meanwhile, Australian captain Pat Cummins also made strides in the rankings, earning 15 rating points after his impressive six-wicket haul at the MCG. This effort helped him rise to No. 3 in the rankings. Additionally, Cummins’ contributions with the bat, including scoring 90 crucial runs during Australia’s 184-run victory in the fourth Test, saw him secure third place in the Test all-rounder rankings.
On the batting side, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal had a standout performance with an 82-run knock in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test, which propelled him to a career-best No. 4 in the Test rankings with 854 points. There was also a significant jump for Nitish Kumar Reddy, who, following his maiden Test century, surged 20 places to No. 53 in the Test batting rankings.
It’s been an exciting update for Indian cricket, with Bumrah’s record-breaking achievement at the forefront and other players also making impressive strides in their respective rankings.
