« Back to Glossary

A count is a specific allegation or claim made by a plaintiff against a defendant in a complaint. A complaint may contain multiple counts, each of which outlines a different wrongdoing that the plaintiff alleges the defendant has committed. For example, a complaint might contain counts for breach of contract, defamation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Each count sets forth the specific facts that the plaintiff believes support the claim and the relief (such as damages) that the plaintiff is seeking.
