The Outer Worlds 2 is coming in 2025 and is set to bring us to a new star system in what will be a follow-up to the first space-faring RPG from Obsidian. Officially announced in 2021, we now have tons of details about the future title thanks to a shiny gameplay trailer revealed during The Game Awards 2024.
It's going to be twice the size of the first game, has new weapons and environments to explore, and is easily one of our most anticipated new games of 2025. It's also the second outing in the upcoming Obsidian games set to release in 2025 - following the first-person fantasy RPG Avowed. So, RPG fans are going to be well-fed for sure.
Among the lineup of upcoming Xbox Series X games we have to look forward to that's set to come to Game Pass, The Outer Worlds 2 is going to be a console players' dream. So, while we wait for even more news to hit us, read on below as we take you through everything we know so far about The Outer Worlds 2.
The Outer Worlds 2 release date will arrive in 2025
After years of waiting, we know that The Outer Worlds 2 release window will be sometime in 2025. This news came our way during The Game Awards 2024 and marked a small relief to all those who have been waiting for the news since 2019.
That's right, the RPG is thought to have entered pre-production in 2019, following the success of the first game. So, it's been literal years for this release window. While we still don't have a firm release date, we do know that it will be after Obsidian releases Avowed - which comes out on February 18, 2025.
The Outer Worlds 2 pre-orders aren't yet available either, but we're expecting them to go live sometime in 2025 once Avowed has had it's time to shine.

The Outer Worlds 2 setting
Obsidian Entertainment Tweeted the following alongside the game’s announcement: "New star system. New crew. Same Outer Worlds."
The Outer Worlds 2 setting is taking us to a new world then, and while we'll be sad to say goodbye to some truly legendary companions, this is probably for the best. We're still light on details regarding this new star system, so keep your eye on this page as we update it once new information heads our way.
With The Outer Worlds PS5 seeming unlikely, owing to Obsidian being a first-party Xbox studio now, it's only fair that the adventure continues with a clean slate.
The Outer Worlds 2 platforms
I know many of you will be hoping that The Outer Worlds 2 on PS5 is going to happen, but sadly, that isn't going to be the case. The Outer Worlds 2 will be exclusive to Xbox Series X and PC, owing to Obsidian being part of the Xbox Game Studios network following its acquisition in 2018. The Outer Worlds 2 will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, like every other first-party release from Xbox.
The Outer Worlds 2 gameplay
The Outer Worlds 2 gameplay was briefly shown during The Game Awards 2024! While we didn't see any of the RPG choice-based elements that made the original game so great, we did have an extensive demonstration of the combat in the upcoming game.
In the trailer, we saw players running for cover, shooting at enemies, and even wielding some cool metal weapons. The level designs look a bit like Mass Effect 2 and Gears of War, with the name of the game being "run to chest-high cover, duck, and then shoot."
The teaser also told players that this game is twice the size of the first Outer Worlds (which lasts for about 12 hours). With that in mind, either the story has been expanded, or there will be more to explore in this game.
We’d also like to see a wider variety of companions to interact with. The ones in the first game were, for the most part, interesting and worth talking to, so we’d like to see Obsidian double down on that and give us more. The fact that our wish list consists of simply wanting more from The Outer Worlds 2 is a testament to how good the original is.
