In this article, we will learn how to find length of a string.

Using the built-in function len() is the most efficient method. It returns the number of items in a container.

Python
a = "geeks"
print(len(a))

Output
5

Using for loop and ‘in’ operator

A string can be iterated over, directly in a for loop. Maintaining a count of the number of iterations will result in the length of the string.

Python
a = "Hello"
count = 0

# Loop through each character in the string 'a'
for char in a:
   # Increment 'count' by 1 for each character
    count += 1
print(count)

Output
5

Using str.count()

count() method is used to count occurrence of given substring. Here, we are using count method to count the spaces between characters, which is always one more than number of character in given string (hence, we are excluding this with -1)

Python
a = "Hello"

#It counts the number of occurrences
#of the specified substring
length = a.count("") - 1
print(length)

Output
5

Using enumerate function

The enumerate() function is typically used to loop over an iterable and keep track of both the index and the value of elements within that iterable.

Python
a = "geeks"

#Initialize a variable 's'
#to keep track of the string's length
s = 0

for i, a in enumerate(a):
  # Increment 's' by 1 for each character in the string
    s += 1
print(s)

Output
5
