Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra S Pen to lose its Bluetooth functionality

S Pen

Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy S25 series in two weeks, with the Galaxy S25 Ultra as its standout model. Known for its built-in S Pen and premium features, the Ultra model has been a favourite among productivity enthusiasts. However, recent leaks suggest a controversial change to the S Pen’s capabilities, raising questions about its overall usability.

Bluetooth features dropped from the S Pen

According to leakster Ishan Agarwal, the S Pen for the Galaxy S25 Ultra will no longer include Bluetooth functionality. This change means features like Air Actions, which allow users to take photos, switch cameras, or navigate apps with gestures, will be absent. These remote control features, available on Galaxy devices since 2021, have been popular among users who enjoy the convenience of controlling their phones from a distance.

Air Actions, the feature suite tied to the S Pen’s Bluetooth capabilities, provides several intuitive controls. A single press of the S Pen takes a photo, a double press switches between cameras, and swiping gestures change photo modes. Additionally, the stylus could perform tasks such as navigating to the home screen, going back, and selecting smart tools like Smart Select. This feature set was available across Samsung’s flagship tablets, Note series, Galaxy Z Fold devices, and previous Galaxy S models, making its removal a significant change for long-time users.

Potential reasoning behind the change

While some users might see this as a step back, Samsung likely has data supporting its decision. The company may have found that most users underutilized Air Actions and Bluetooth-enabled features. Additionally, the redesigned Galaxy S25 Ultra, with its rounded corners and smaller stylus, might have influenced removing these features to ensure the S Pen fits seamlessly into the device.

The move to drop Bluetooth in the S Pen may hurt the appeal of the Galaxy S25 Ultra for fans who use Air Actions for work or art. For others, the S Pen’s core tasks like note-taking and drawing may still work well. Yet, the move raises doubt on whether this cut fits the top-tier feel of Samsung’s Ultra line. As Samsung shows off the S25 phones, users’ thoughts on this shift will show if it suits the needs of its key buyers.
