The Adidas Samba has been the world's hypiest sneaker for a minute. But now, if Emily Ratajkowski's latest trainer is anything to go by, it looks as if a new grail is en route. While shopping in New York City, the American model broke her Puma streak with a fresh pair of Adidas SL-72s. And considering both of these sportswear brands have been beefing since forever (a story for another day), that's not nothing.

Last Friday, the Gone Girl actor was spotted wearing a sports bra, a dark red cardigan, some oversized black trousers, and she paired all of this with the Adidas SL-72 in the ‘Semi Green Spark’ colourway.

First introduced in 1972 just in time for the Summer Olympics in Munich, the SL-72 is a running shoe that was famous for its super light construction (which is shorthand for the “SL” in its name). In 2022, the German brand re-released it in time for its 50th bday, and Grace Wales Bonner even released two of her own versions to celebrate – and people are eyeing it as the next Samba alt.

While the British prime minister is responsible for a lot of bad shit that's going on, the death of the Samba isn't entirely his fault. It may have run its course to over-saturation. That's seen a popularity bump for sneakers like the Onitsuka Tiger Tai Chi, and the Karhu Fusion 2.0.

But for now, models like Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski can't get enough of the Adidas SL-72 – and they're two very influentials endorsements for the next big summer sneaker.
