BBC's The Capture season 2 ramps up the Line of Duty and Black Mirror vibes

Three years after the critically acclaimed series hit our screens, a timely new conspiracy is coming to light
The Capture season two

With the emergence of deepfakes, fake news, and the torrent of disinformation that we now have to wrangle, civilisation oft feels on the brink of collapse. Thanks to The Capture, then, for blowing out the solitary, flickering candle of hope on which we hitch our silly little futures, because y'know it's only gonna get worse.

And as if it couldn't be more timely, season two of the hotly-acclaimed conspiracy series is coming to the Beeb after a three year absence — and this time, it seems they're doubling down on the tech dystopia of it all.

Season one, of course, saw Callum Turner's Special Forces soldier Shaun Emery framed for murder by way of deepfaked CCTV footage. Now, a new conspiracy arises. Here's everything we know about season two of The Capture.

The Capture season two is a timely show for the era of disinformation

That's what we can gather from the trailer and official synopsis, at least. “Series two of The Capture will again question if we can really believe what we see,” it reads — but this time, the stakes seem much, much higher. "Britain is under siege: hacked news feeds, manipulated media, and interference in politics.

"Entrenched in the UK's own ‘Correction’ unit, DCI Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) finds herself in the middle of a new conspiracy — with a new target. But how can she solve this case when she can't even trust her closest colleagues?

“Escalating from the CCTV thriller of series one, the six-part run features ‘invisible’ assassins, the terrifying rise of deepfake technology, the ever-growing tension between government and Big Tech, and corruption at the heart of the British media.”

Basically, what they're saying is: it's Line of Duty by way of Black Mirror, though this dystopic future ain't all that far away.

Who's in the cast of The Capture season two?

It's a bumper cast of Brit TV regulars with a touch of Hollywood star-power.

Holliday Grainger, Ron Perlman, Ben Miles, Lia Williams, Cavan Clerkin, Ginny Holder and Nigel Lindsay all return from season one.

Paapa Essiedu continues his breakneck 2022 with the addition of Isaac Turner MP, a wunderkind politician with huge ambitions. Going by the trailer, it looks as though he'll be at the center of the conspiracy in play, a Newsnight interview being catastrophically derailed by deepfakery. (But… by whom?)

Other new additions include Indira Varma from Game of Thrones, Hanna's Andy Nyman, Charlie Murphy of Peaky Blinders fame, and Rob Yang, best known for playing sure-headed startup boss in Succession.
