White in winter? If Chris Evans is doing it, so can you

In the US, wearing white after Labor Day simply isn't the done thing. Falling on the first Monday of September each year, traditionally in America the day has been seen as the point at which summer wardrobes go into storage and winter ones are brought back out again.

While we don't have Labor Day here in the UK, the rule is often practiced regardless. We at GQ aren't ones for unnecessary dictums (unless we're talking about formalwear, in which case we're sticklers) and it appears everyone's favourite superhero Chris Evans is with us.

Attending the premiere of Knives Out (you know, Daniel Craig's next big hit) in Los Angeles, Evans served Jay Gatsby on heat. Wearing a Brunello Cucinelli-designed winter-ready double-breasted off-white corduroy suit, Evans eschewed the no white after Labor Day diktat in style. And he isn't the only one who's been flouting the rules. Last week Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery wore an all-white ensemble – with everything from his shoes to his belt and his vest getting the bleached-out treatment – while Cody Fern delivered a gender-bending look consisting of a sheer lace ivory top and split-hem white trousers.

And on the Autumn/Winter 2019 catwalks we saw plenty of dove, off-white and bleached coral (as Pantone calls it) too. At Ami, Alexandre Mattiussi showed heavy wool coats in clotted cream and tonal underlayers (think cable knit jumpers) teamed with muted trousers, while at Jacquemus embroidered white suits were everywhere.

So, forget everything you've heard – you can wear white this winter. Need a helping hand in giving your wardrobe a white wash? Below are our top picks for the months ahead...
