How we chose the best men's underwear brands
Like all of GQ Recommends' fashion guides, Heidi Quill and her style experts (Faye Fearon, Adam Cheung, and Jessie Atkinson among them) have put their two cents into this article, analysing material, cut, style and value for money in their selections. To ensure our choices are based on real life wear, we've also enlisted the opinions of the men in our lives, including the GQ editors and writers we work alongside every day, including fitness fanatics Esat Dedezade and fan of the classics Owen Gough.
What's the difference between each underwear style?
Believe it or not, there are hidden depths to your boxer-briefs — or at least how they compare to a pair of trunks or sports underwear. From fit to material and compression levels, there are a whole bunch of factors that affect what's the right underwear for your body type. That's why we've outlined the main styles below and who they're best suited to…
What are men's briefs?
Best for: Men with larger thighs (and those who are, ahem, more well-endowed)
Forget those briefs your mother used to buy you, the new generation of designer styles on the market are sleeker, stretchy, and more stereotype-breaking than ever. And there’s a reason you’ve seen footballers who put in the legwork, such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo wearing them in campaigns: they’re the best choice for guys with bigger thighs. If you’re repping thicker trunks, you’ll find underwear with legs tends to ride up during the day, causing a roll in the material that will show through slim-fitting trousers.
What are men's boxers?
Best for: Maximum breathability
Ah, the classic boxer. Although you probably first wore these, day-to-day, in your teens as a rebellion against the tighty-whities you'd been forced to wear before, this is another style of underwear that has had a gentlemanly makeover in the past few years. The baggy cut and bunched, elasticated waist might be the most traditional version, but plenty of designers now offer shorter, slimmer-cut pairs of underwear with a stretch band waist, which are a viable option for men with slim thighs.
What are men's boxer-briefs?
Best for: Taller men (and guys with an ample posterior)
A good pair of boxer-briefs usually hit the mid- to low-thigh and often have a button fly. This means they can also be a great additional style, alongside briefs, for men with larger thighs – and the added material between your legs means it can help avoid any rubbing or chafing. That said, if that’s your goal, be sure to choose your best boxer briefs wisely: go for the longer length cotton boxer briefs, and make sure they’re not too tight or they will bunch up under your trousers.
What are men's trunks?
Best for: Slimmer men or gym-honed guys
The newest style on this list, trunks are a shorter version of the boxer-brief and have grown in popularity with the rise of super-skinny trouser styles over the past five years or so. When it comes to length, they tend to sit from the mid- to upper-thigh. Some come with a keyhole fly, but usually the style is flat-fronted and sometimes includes an extra pouch of fabric for added support and... "enhancement".
What about men's sports underwear?
Best for: Working out in (surprise, surprise)
The performance boxer. Not only are these pants constructed to more effectively wick moisture during sweaty sessions, but they're also made from materials that move even more freely than that of Tom Ford's or Versace's. Unlike the jockstrap – an underwear style that also has sporting origins thanks to its breathable, open back – some longer pairs even come with subtle compression to help increase blood flow post-workout.

What underwear do urologists recommend?
As with the best women's lingerie, the undies that are best for your health often aren't the sexiest or most fun. To wit: urologists recommend looser underwear (i.e. boxers over briefs) to reduce bacteria build-up and overheating. The same can be said of materials: not unlike the rest of your wardrobe, natural fibres (cotton, most commonly) are superior for their breathability and kindness on the skin.
Which type of underwear is best for men?
Personal comfort and lifestyle are inherently important in this subject. For instance, someone who jogs daily should choose a pair of sports underwear, which are especially made to forgo chafing, and better support your two veg during exercise. Someone with an office job will likely get on fine with a pair of boxers, though those who prefer more support even when at rest will likely get on best with a boxer-brief. And if we're talking about “best” in the sense of pulling power, boxer-briefs or jockstraps should be your port of call.
