Though our favourite dining rooms are reopening (rejoice), that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to treat yourself in the comfort of your own home. So, here’s a roundup of our favourite top-end restaurant delivery services. Let’s call it eating in to help out…
‘Taste Of Ynyshir’ Barbecue Experience
According to historians, Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was the first and last king of Wales. From 1055 to 1063 he ruthlessly ruled the country until he came to a typically sticky end. Since then there have been many pretenders to the throne (Dylan Thomas, Aneurin Bevan, Tom Jones), but there has been no obvious choice with a legitimate claim on the crown… until now. Gareth Ward, head chef and co-owner of Wales' best restaurant, is a modern-day culinary master who has put the rural village of Ynyshir in the Rhondda Valley on the map. An incredibly creative and imaginative cook, he lives by the mantra “flavour-driven, fat-fuelled and meat-obsessed” and his food very much lives up to that billing. To try it for yourself, order his barbecue box from Starchefs and submit to his rule. Ward's meal kit includes A5 beef wagyu with black bean sauce, green pepper mayonnaise and raw shiitake, barbecue duck hoisin, spring onion and cucumber salad with spring onion oil, char siu pork, plum sauce and glazed miso black-cod served with bao buns. He will also throw in a set of chef's tweezers to use on the grill and a bespoke Ynyshir playlist from the restaurant's resident DJ. All hail King Gareth! (There's just one small problem… he's not actually Welsh. We hope that isn't an issue.) Boxes cost £150 for two. starchefs.co.uk
Otto
Phil Howard is, quite simply, a legend. As a chef, he has been performing at the top of his game for years. Quietly, professionally and impeccably, he has been making sensational food rather than celebrity-chef headlines, attracting knowledgeable diners wherever he lays his whites. Having worked with Marco Pierre White at Harveys and with Simon Hopkinson at Bibendum, he made his name at The Square and later at Elystan Street, but he is still working hard, developing culinary ideas and perfecting new concepts. His latest is Otto, a simple but stunning pasta delivery service that promises to make at-home dining quick, easy and utterly delicious. His first comfort food range includes gnocchetti with smashed sausage, fennel, white wine and garlic, ravioli of wild mushrooms and truffle with a thyme, shallot and white wine sauce and a classic linguine with brown shrimps, spring onions, cayenne and citrus zest. Prices start at £8.50, which is indecently good value. Order now. Otto will be available throughout London and, ultimately, nationwide, starting with the South West. ottopasta.com
Oblix ‘Finish At Home’
There’s one metric by which nobody is meant to judge a restaurant, but by which everybody does judge a restaurant. Something so gauche we hesitate to talk so brazenly about it here. But here goes. Whisper it: are the portions big enough? Well, in the case of Oblix’s new delivery service, you can rest assured that they absolutely are. If you are looking for a true at-home feast – if you want to be wrapped up in the comforting stupor of a dinner well eaten – then it is outstanding value for money. It’s also, quite simply, outstanding.
Oblix is the award-winning British restaurant perched on the 32nd floor of The Shard skyscraper in London Bridge. While its “nationwide Finish At Home” service can’t emulate the views of the place itself, it does an undeniably good job of replicating the cooking. The menu is focused around dishes that travel well but offer a sense of indulgence. Wagyu beef Wellington; lobster with lemon verbena and garlic butter; whole roast chicken with truffle mashed potatoes. When GQ trialled the service, our dinner started with a very large, very creamy burrata, which set the tone. This segued into glazed short rib (for our dining partner) and wagyu burger with aged cheddar and truffle mayonnaise (for us), accompanied by a side of four-cheese macaroni. To cap off proceedings: a chocolate, caramel and almond fondant with Madagascan vanilla custard.
It’s a hell of a dinner. But, trust us, you won’t regret it for a moment. oblixnationwide.slerp.com
Roka ‘Finish At Home’
OK, so not everyone has a robatayaki grill at home. So what? You won't need one with Roka’s new “Finish At Home” kit, because they do all the “fireside cooking” for you… all you have to do is finish the job. Available nationwide, this DIY menu from one of the world’s most successful high-end Japanese restaurant chains features many of its classic signature dishes just waiting for you to provide the final flourish. Its kit includes baby back pork ribs with sesame glaze, Roka lamb cutlets with Korean spices, Japanese mushroom truffle rice, salmon fillet teriyaki with sansho salt and lemon and braised beef rice with pickled daikon, soya glaze and miso butter. But best of all – and if Roka hadn’t included it GQ would have been so upset that we might have snapped our chopsticks in frustration – is the legendary marinated black cod with yuzu and pickled radish. Just typing those words is enough to have us drooling at our keyboard and having fishy flashbacks. For those about to Roka, we salute you! rokarestaurant.com
Phomo
Pho is Vietnam's favourite dish and for very, very good reason. Not only is it healthy, nutritious and delicious, it is also low in calories, is comforting and filling and is even believed to be one of the best cures for a hangover (and now that pub's are starting to reopen, that kind of thing really matters again). For many, noodle broths are the ultimate fast food (just ask Momofuku creator and ramen aficionado Dave Chang) and that's where pho-nominal food entrepreneur Daniya Stewart comes in. Having devoured hundreds of bowls of pho for lunch, when lockdown came she decided that if she couldn't buy her favourite food, she would make it herself. The results were so impressive, she turned her passion for pho into Phomo and the rest is available for nationwide delivery. Available with beef, chicken, prawn or a vegan option, Stewart's pho broth is cooked for eight hours and each bowl clocks in at less than 500 calories. And that's not all, because the best thing about pho is the myriad of pun-tastic opportunities this dish affords food reviewers. And having sampled this one, we would have to say that not only is Phomo un-pho-gettable, it is also pho-king delicious. phomouk.com
Thunderbird Fried Chicken
Thunderbirds are go! With the opening of his latest branch in London's Earl's Court, Matt Harris' Thunderbird Fried Chicken empire has now grown to eight stores… and he is still struggling to keep up with demand. Having started his business with a barbecue food truck, Harris soon discovered he had a knack for making magical fried chicken wings and after winning an award at WingFest he decided to give other barbecue the bird and focus his attention in one direction. The result is breathtaking Buffalo wings, jaw-dropping Thunderbun chicken burgers, molten Meltdown Tater Tots and even freshly fried churros. They also do strips, dips, chips and buckets… and at least one salad (in case you have a rabbit). And if chicken isn't your thing, they also have a host of vegan and vegetarian options. Either way, it is way better than finger lickin' good… it's finger lickin' great. thunderbirdckn.co.uk
Veeraswamy
When you are London's oldest Indian restaurant and you have a history dating to 1926, it is probably safe to say you are doing something right. And as Veeraswamy closes in on its 100-year anniversary, the Michelin-starred curry house that overlooks London's Regent Street is joining the “at home” trend in some style. Providing diners with a condensed version of their famous menu, Veeraswamaholics can now order some of the restaurant's favourite dishes – lamb handi gola kabab, Amritsari tandoori chicken, roast duck vindaloo and Hyderabadi chicken biryani – all delivered via Supper and Deliveroo. Order a feast, a couple of cocktails (a Cosmo with rhubarb, or a Seville orange Old Fashioned), a bottle and pretend you are back in the West End. veeraswamy.com
At Home By Mark Birchall
By rights, Mark Birchall, chef patron at two-Michelin star Moor Hall, should be so busy polishing his many awards (not a euphemism) for his hugely successful food/restaurant/rooms/kitchen garden that he wouldn't even have time to create an "at home" meal kit. But thanks to the Covid kick in the knackers that keeps on kicking, this year the Moor Hall trophy cabinet is not as full as it should be (it's always difficult to win things when you are closed), so instead Birchall has joined the home-cooking club and, well, obviously it is completely brilliant. With his impeccable attention to detail and utilising all the skills he picked up at Northcote and L'Enclume over the years, Birchall's ever-changing seasonal menus are smart, pretty easy to make and beautifully balanced. GQ's kit included Jersualem artichoke soup, lobster and scallop raviolo, and a roast Goosnargh chicken with celeriac and leek. We aren't sure what you will get when you order, but rest assured it will be stunning. No wonder he won a GQ Food & Drink Award in 2018. moorhall.com
Bancone
Life's too short to eat bad pasta. And if you live in London, there is absolutely no excuse for it. In the last few years fantastic and affordable Italians have been popping up with delicious regularity all over the capital, of which Bancone is one of the best. Translated, its name means “counter” or “bar” which sounds pretty basic… but when the food it serves is this good, the secret to its success is clearly to keep things simple. Its modern Italian menu is a mix of classics and clever twists on family favourites and is now available on plateaway.com to customers within the M25. Starters include burrata with heritage tomatoes and basil oil and a selection of salumi. The cook-'em-yourself in minutes mains include wild boar ragu with pecorino and tagliatelle, spicy pork and 'nduja ragu with mafalde, spinach and ricotta “mezzaluna” ravioli with sage butter, and GQ's pick of rigatoni with white veal and black truffle. Pick a steaming bowl of any of those and you can die happy. bancone.co.uk
Pataka
Who opens a restaurant in the middle of a pandemic? That's right… no one. Unless, of course, you find yourself a wonderfully clever USP and hit it out of the park within weeks of trading. In other words, Pataka. What founder, Arjun Baljee, and his head chef Manmeet Singh Bali have done is create a “bright kitchen” concept whereby they take over restaurant spaces closed during the pandemic and use the empty spaces to cook modern Indian food in your local area. It is a cheeky, clever and very cool idea for these difficult times and they are intending to roll them out across London in the next few months. Of course, it wouldn't work if the food was lousy, but rest assured Pataka's is not. It calls itself Indian 2.0 and with dishes such as wild mushroom rice with morels, spiced baby chicken with its own authentic tandoori masala, and truffle pecorino kulcha with black truffle oil, shiitake, pecorino and cheddar, you'll soon be converted to the cause. Get it on the online equivalent of speed dial right now… patakaindian.com
Calum Franklin's Pie Kit
First things first, let us be clear: Calum Franklin is the Jedi master of pie making. Be it puff, flaky and rough puff, through to filo, suet or hot water crust, when it comes to the alchemy of turning flour, fat, salt and water into baked (or steamed) ambrosia, Franklin is the king. He wrote a book called The Pie Room and is executive chef at the Holborn Dining Room, so If you feel the knead, the knead for dough… OK, you get the idea. Putting his skill, knowledge and very cold hands to good use in lockdown, Franklin has partnered with Restaurant Kits to give at home bakers the benefit of his years of experience. Order his kit and you get a video masterclass in pastry prep, a pie dish, a pre-made filling (GQ's was chicken and shiitake mushroom), a lattice cutter, oven-roasted carrots and clapshot. But more than that, it is not until you have attempted to make a pie that you find out just what kind of chef you really are. (Full disclosure, GQ is the kind of chef that can't crimp.) Native At Home
We love the ethical and sustainable Native group, but even more so now that they are opening in London's Mayfair at Browns on Brook Street. Not only does that mean we can enjoy their food when the world reopens, but hey… we're practically neighbours. However, until we get back to face-to-face feasting, we are having to content ourselves with its new “finish-at-home” delivery boxes (plus a small bottle of its in-house Negroni). It's packed with its hyper-seasonal specials, and GQ enjoyed fermented potato waffle with chicken liver parfait and rhubarb and brown crab speltotto with Lincolnshire poacher and a white crab salsa, followed by a main course of fallow deer, celeriac, oyster mushrooms and bone marrow crumb, a double dessert of rhubarb and rosemary brown butter cake with meadowsweet cream and, finally, a “Mermillionaire” shortbread. OK, we admit it… we've gone Native. nativeproducestore.co.uk
Chick'N'Sours Meal Kit
Sometimes, only fried chicken will do. And, no, we're not talking about the Colonel here. For a start, we doubt very much if that is a genuine military rank, but if it was we reckon Chick'N'Sours creators Carl Clarke and David Wolanski are probably majors… because their chicken is majorly good (sorry). Launched in 2015 in Haggerston, East London, from its first day of opening the demand for their finger-lickin' chicken has been off the scale and people only stopped queuing for the food when, you know, there was a global pandemic. So to meet at-home demand, the Chick'N'Sours crew created their meal kits and the rest, as they say, has been a sellout success. So if you want to get your hot wings/chicken tenders with seaweed crack/K-pop sandwich/kung-pao-wing fried chicken fix, make sure you order as soon as the booking line opens. And we shouldn't have to tell you this, but for goodness sake order some of their sour cocktails. chicknsours.co.uk
Empire Biryani by Gunpowder
Indian cuisine can mean two completely different things depending on where you eat it. Stay home and you are almost certainly in the realm of the curry house, with all its fire and fun and ghee. Sometimes that is precisely what one needs. But eat out and you can find something else entirely, with clever ingredients, refined cooking and bold ideas. Never the twain shall meet. Or at least so it was, until lockdown spurred a host of top-flight Indian restaurants to begin delivering far and wide. Among them, Gunpowder, the Indian kitchen in Spitalfields (and, latterly, Tower Bridge) that has wooed the foodie set with its combination of casual, clattery dining and exceptional cooking.
Its at-home service is called Empire Biryani and, as with the physical restaurant, the menu is short, focused and designed to vivify. You choose from either the “Kashmir Lamb Roast” or the “Emperor’s Feast”. We went for the latter in the form of a meal kit, which meant a parcel arrived at our door packed with oven-ready boxes of beef boti kebab, Hyderabadi baby aubergine salan, lamb biryani, burani raita and triple chocolate brownie with cardamom custard. Every dish held a surprise. We might be used to eating aubergines chopped up, for instance, whereas here they were served traditionally: whole, tender little fruits with stems still intact like veggie ortolans. Or take the lamb biryani, which was topped with a golden shortcrust pastry holding in spices that tasted garden-fresh. Straightforwardly, it was all excellent. And before we leave lockdown, you should try it. Delivery nationwide, £50 for two. empirebiryani.com
Benares @ Home
Chefs… reassemble! Forget The Avengers – when Benares needed to rediscover its mojo, the owners looked to their celebrated history and rehired Sameer Taneja and some of his old team to run the kitchen. Chef Sameer had left in 2015 to take on a new challenge at Talli Joe (now closed), but his return in 2019 revitalised the Halal-friendly Indian restaurant and despite the lockdown restrictions, last month they were rewarded with a Michelin star. To find out what all the fuss is about, you need to order from the Benares @ Home menu. Delivered anywhere within the M25, you'll find all the curry classics but prepared with a next-level fine-dining flavour and flair. Aloo tikki chaat, chicken biryani, rogan josh, murgh makhani, black dal, naans… the list goes on. But don't just take our word for it. Ask Michelin: “The star ingredient of each dish is of exemplary quality… and the kitchen cleverly balances modern techniques with recognisable flavours and spicing.” Delivery inside the M25. benaresrestaurant.com
Padella At Home
In 2010, pasta masters Tim Siadatan and Jordan Frieda finally brought their big idea to life. They wanted to open a neighbourhood Italian restaurant that would serve classic food at affordable prices… and they hoped a few other people might like it too. After all, 60 million Italians seem to like it. Their first place was Trullo and the results were bravissimo. Their follow-up was Padella and that might be even better. To try if for yourself (anywhere in mainland UK), simply log in and order up some antipasti, a house cocktail and one of their sensational pasta kits for two. GQ heartily (and hungrily) recommends the pappardelle with eight-hour long horn beef shin ragu and the pici with Tamworth sausage. Not only are they quick to prepare and utterly delicious, they are also incredibly easy to assemble. Buon appetito! Delivery nationwide, from £20 for two. shop.padella.co
Juici Jerk
With the exception of a few “hard-working” influencers, travelling to the Caribbean right now is distinctly off the table. However, Juici Jerk is putting sunshine back on the menu and bringing a taste of the West Indies to your home, courtesy of its classic and contemporary cuisine. Launched in 2017 by the Johnson brothers Troy and Jarrell in Tooting, South West London, its delicious DIY kits feature plenty of everything – chicken wings, chicken thighs, rice and peas, plantain fries, festivals and a fruit punch – plus some add-it-yourself chilli to bring as much heat as you can handle. Order a box, line-up the Spotify playlist and turn the central heating up. Summer's here! Delivery nationwide, from £30. juicijerk.com
Petersham Nurseries’ Café Dine-At-Home box
Of course, if you want a food delivery job doing well, you can rely on the artisans at Petersham Nurseries to smash it. Having launched its four-course menu in February, discerning diners should know what to expect from the “sustainable gastronomy” specialists, but in case you don't here's what to expect. For a starter, how about fresh tagliatelle with anchovy and artichoke? For a main course, carnivores can choose a Haye Farm porchetta with winter garden herbs, while vegetarians can opt for a delica pumpkin, chard and goats' cheese pithivier (both are served with braised endive and radicchio). For dessert there is a light but old-school steamed date pudding, followed finally by Winslade cheese and honey from Petersham's on-site hives in Richmond. Sweet in more ways than one… Delivery nationwide. petershamnurseries.com
Cash & Kari By Hoppers
The multi award-winning Hoppers is a love it or… love it kind of restaurant. Actually, make that restaurants, because there are now three of them. Specialising in Sri Lankan and South Indian food, Hoppers is part of the JKS Group (Gymkhana, Brigadiers, Lyle's etc) and as a result has mastered the at-home delivery service better than almost anyone else. (Don't believe us… scroll down for more details of the Ambassador General Store.) Hoppers' ultimate kit is the one to go for and includes its astonishingly delicious bone marrow varuval, mutton rolls, kalupol chicken, lamb kothu, steamed string hoppers and a choco-coco biscuit pudding. The prep is straightforward, the results stupendous and the only problem is who gets to mop up the last of the kari sauce. Delivery in England, Wales and Glasgow. hopperscashandkari.com
Gaucho At Home
For over 25 years and now with 16 branches across the country, the Gaucho Argentinean steak house has never failed to provide red-blooded meat-eaters with their favourite cuts. However, with lockdown restrictions in place, committed carnivores have been going hangry… until now. Since the start of January, Gaucho At Home has finally been satisfying those restaurant-quality beef cravings and its menu is getting better and better. Steak, short-ribs and Wellingtons are all on the menu, but GQ's tip is to try a Gaucho Pie Box. From £55 for two people, it comes with a choice of starter (smoked salmon with beetroot tartare or spiced butternut squash soup) and then you can pick your pie – beef and malbec, chicken and chorizo or a burrata and spinach – with sides of provolone potatoes and honey and herb roasted vegetables. Dessert, if you can manage it, is a bitter chocolate torte with dulce de leche. Throw in a bottle of something red and the evening is complete. (Oh, and keep the details to hand… Gaucho is also launching a Sunday roast and a “Meat & Bun” burger concept.) Delivery nationwide. gauchorestaurants.com
The Game Bird Signature Box at The Stafford
Ben Tish is a man after our own hearts. Rather than make an at-home kit complicated, his Game Bird Signature Box is about as easy to finish off as the food is when it lands on your table. Soda bread and butter. Done. H Forman & Son smoked salmon, cucumber and dill pickle, with horseradish créme fraîche is assembled in seconds. Beef Wellington (just stick it in the oven), sprouting broccoli, and pomme purée is pan-to-plate basic. The Lyle's sponge pudding and custard simply needs a blast in the microwave. And the petit fours arrive in neat little bags. You'll have to open the Stafford claret yourself, but if we can manage that, so can you. And you absolutely should. Delivery nationwide, £120. thestaffordlondon.com
StarChefs x Andrew Wong Chinese New Year Box
What better way to celebrate becoming the first Chinese restaurant in the UK to be awarded two Michelin stars than with a new year feast… Andrew Wong, the superstar chef (and GQ's Restaurateur Of The Year at the 2019 GQ Food & Drink Awards) behind the accolade-laden dim-sum restaurant A Wong (and the sadly short-lived Kym's), has partnered with culinary director David Swann and StarChefs to deliver a 13-dish banquet straight to people's homes. Seared Wagyu beef with three sauces (well, it is going to be the year of the ox), barbecued sweetcorn with beef XO sauce, whole sea bass with ginger spring onion en papillote and scalded kingfish “yu shang” with garlic, chilli and coriander soy are just a few of the standout dishes on Wong's sharing menu. It also comes with festive table decorations and a playlist for the ultimate dine-in-to-dine-out experience. Gong hei fat choy. Delivery nationwide, £165 for two. starchefs.co.uk
Paco Tapas Menu Box
If this isn't a taste of Barcelona in a box, we don't know what is. Michelin-star chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias may be based in Bristol rather than the Basque Country, but his tapas delivery kit will transport you to a warmer, sunnier and happier place. Featuring all his greatest hits – including manzanilla olives, jamon croqueta, gambas al ajillo, octopus a la Gallega, stuffed quail and chocolate mousse, olive oil and toast for dessert – each dish is accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions and a packet of golden sunshine. (OK, it's actually a matching glass of sherry, but you get the idea.) Did somebody say lockdown fiesta? Delivery nationwide, £100 for two. pacotapas.co.uk
‘Susuru By Masaki’ ramen from Dinings SW3
If you want to make your at-home eating experience simple but not at the expense of flavour, you have to try Masaki Sugisaki's build-your-own “Susuru” ramen kit. Literally translated from the Japanese to “sip or slurp”, Dining SW3's executive chef has created a hearty and umami-packed dish that pays tribute to the 400-year-old Asian staple. Featuring traditional taka-suimen noodles, a broth made from chicken and shiitake mushroom stock, a soft boiled nitamago egg marinated in white soy and yuzu, plus “chai sui” chicken and dried seaweed, this is nothing short of feel-good, taste-great comfort food at its very best. And best of all for those of a more Western disposition, at home no one can hear you slluuurrrpppp. Delivery up to ten miles from Walton Street, London SW3, £23 per person. diningssw3.co.uk
Asador 44 Experience Box
Wales has had a pretty hard time of things lately, but the chaos of Covid has not stopped Cardiff-based Spanish restaurant Asador 44 from creating a delivery box that could lift anyone’s spirits. The star of the show is a jaw-dropping, heart-breaking, mind-blowingly good 1kg Chuletón of 10-year-old, 50-day dry-aged rare native Galician breed beef. As if that wasn’t thrilling enough, it also comes with roasted pepper, patatas a lo pobre (poor man’s potatoes), Jamón Ibérico butter, alongside four bottles of Galicia’s favourite beer Estrella Galicia. Feliz Navidad has never tasted better. Delivery nationwide, £110 for two. assador44.co.uk
Goila’s butter chicken
“The best butter chicken in the world.” Really… in the world? That’s the bold claim made by disciples of chef/restaurateur Saransh Goila’s signature curry creation and, having tried it, we’re almost… nearly convinced. Since it first arrived in Mumbai five years ago, the cult of Goila Butter Chicken has been spreading around the world and, after a residency at Marylebone’s Carousel last February, London is falling under its spell. Plans are in motion for a restaurant in 2021, but until then you can try it for yourself by ordering online. Boxes come with butter chicken, dal makhani, jeera rice and sourdough naan. At the moment, it is London only, but world domination is on the way… From £19.50. goilabutterchicken.co.uk

In truth, the hard part is deciding what not to order… From £120. mortimerhousekitchen.com
Japes Pizza
Sometimes, only pizza will do. And sometimes, if you have ever been to Chicago, you will know that only deep dish pizza will do. Fortunately, if you are reading this from somewhere other than the Windy City, we have good news: Soho pie makers Japes have launched their “deep dish” pizza kits and they are fantastic. Each one comes with two pizzas, their secret tomato sauce, cheese and toppings. They also have an easy-to-follow “how to…” clip so you can put it together at home, and it will be ready in 15 minutes. You need never call Domino’s ever… again. From £25.95. shop.japes.uk

Taka
Taka, Marylebone's finest Japanese restaurant which opened its doors in autumn 2020 after the success of its three-year old Mayfair branch, has launched Taka-way (see what they did there?) which will bring its impressive and unique menu, in which Japanese techniques meet local British produce, to homes across central London. Curated by executive chef Taiji Maruyama in collaboration with head chef Jonathan Dowling, the menu has been made using only responsibly and locally sourced produce. Up for grabs there's Scottish Salmon Tataki, Wagyu Dripping Rice Bowl with Wagyu Fat and Sukiyaki Sauce on Sushi Rice, Nasu Dengaku and Taka Fried Chicken, and, the standout option, the luxurious Kagoshima A5 Wagyu Sando on Happy Sky Shokupan Bread. And of course, the drinks list is equally as impressive and includes wines from England such as the light-bodied Fitz Sparkling Wine from Sussex and the 2014 Litmus Element 20 Chardonnay from Surrey, as well as a wide selection of red and white wines, plus Japanese beers such as Owa and Kirin Ichiban. supper.london
Hame By Adam Handling
Adam Handling, named GQ's Restaurateur Of The Year at the 2020 Food & Drink Awards, doesn't do things by half measures – from cutting-edge restaurants and bars to classic afternoon tea and private dining experiences, if Handling is at the helm you are guaranteed an unforgettable experience. So when the first lockdown (and persistent requests from his loyal regulars) finally convinced him to create a hame (the Scottish word for home) dining menu, it was always going to be a winner. But Handling didn't stop there. To take his hame offering to the next level in lockdown two, Handling has now added some of his signature dishes only previously available at his flagship Frog restaurant. Lobster wagyu, chicken butter and cheese doughnuts are all here and it is also possible to order Sunday lunch, Christmas dinner, a New Year's Eve feast and even a “Who are you trying to impress?” menu. (He has also created a collection of bottled cocktails that are just brilliantly done.) Book a delivery, scan the accompanying QR code and let Adam talk you through the whole cooking and assembly process. Hame cooking doesn't get any better than this.

Quo Vadis At Home
If anyone is capable of bringing a little light to relief to lockdown it is the chef proprietor of Quo Vadis, Jeremy Lee. The charismatic Scot is a genuine gastro bon vivant and his presence inside “the Great Dame of Dean Street” has helped the restaurant and members' club maintain its reputation as an institution in London's Soho. However, with no diners to charm at present, Lee and his head chef, Doug Sims, have directed their energy to creating the Quo Vadis At Home menu and it is a delight. Sticking with their classic seasonal and regional British fare, it offers diners dishes such as baked salsify and parmesan, cured salmon with pickled cucumbers, goose and pork rillettes, and a life-affirming turkey and bacon pie. Throw in a couple of Negronis or a pair of Martinis and get Robin Hart to recommend a bottle of something suitably refreshing and you are guaranteed a fabulous evening. The only shame is that Lee can't join you… but he'll definitely be there in spirit. £95 for two. quovadis.bignight.app
Simon Rogan At Home
GQ nearly killed Simon Rogan once. We were up in the Lake District, talking to the chef about his brilliant two-Michelin starred restaurant, L’Enclume in Cartmel, and the photographer made him climb on a dry-stone wall and he fell. Fortunately for us, Rogan survived and has used his second chance at life to launch Simon Rogan At Home – previously only available in the Lake District, he now ships nationwide and it really is something special. Delivering a £45 per person three-course seasonal menu (a five-course festive feast is also coming soon) that changes each week, diners can expect delicious winter dishes such as ham hock terrine with pickles, guinea fowl with Jerusalem artichokes and a lemon verbena posset. Thanks for the food, Simon (sorry about the murder attempt). simonroganathome.co.uk
Wild Rabbit
Straight out of the Cotswolds, the magnificent Wild Rabbit in Kingham is bringing the organic ingredients of Gloucestershire's Daylesford Farm, touched by the hand of head chef Nathan Eades, straight to your home. Supplying a three-course menu for two, complete with a bottle of Léoube from their sister estate in Provence, everything is supplied in completely guilt-free recyclable packaging and the dishes themselves are simple, inspiring and easy to prepare. Starters include Loch Duart salmon with beetroot and English wasabi and a Daylesford cheddar and onion tartlet. For dessert there is a prune and almond tart with crème Anglais. But GQ is still feeling misty-eyed over our main course… the braised lamb shoulder, with potato gratin and glazed carrot. thewildrabbit.co.uk
Northcote
Lisa Goodwin-Allen started working at Lancashire's Northcote hotel and restaurant in 2001. That means she has been cooking at a Michelin-star standard for nigh-on 20 years and we think she's probably got the hang of it. So much so that she is now able to turn all of us into her sous chefs… Well, kind of. Using all her skills and the abundance of local ingredients, Goodwin-Allen has created two gourmet boxes for at-home diners to prepare. The Autumn Box (£90) features two appetisers (North Sea cod with curry, pomegranate and coriander sauce and a caramelised celeriac consommé with raviolis), a main course of truffle and brioche stuffed roast chicken with Lyonnaise potato and an apple cheesecake with salted caramel sauce. There is also a “Classic” gourmet box (£105). Lisa and her team have done the hard work. All you have to do is take the credit. Ambassador General Store
If you have been missing your restaurant-quality spice fix over lockdown, you obviously haven't heard of Ambassador General Store. Created by the JKS group, this is your one-stop online shop for Gymkhana, Trishna and Brigadiers. Offering a variety of two- and four-person feasts, this is the place to come for Jyotin, Karam and Sunaina Sethi's legendary kid goat keema pao, tandoori masala lamb chops, wild muntjack biryani, pork cheek vindaloo and a veritable mountain of dals, breads, poppadoms and gol guppas. Beautifully presented, accompanied by handsome recipe cards and with an essential drinks menu as well (from their own Rifles Pale Ale to the Brigadiers Old-Fashioned and Gymkhana Pink Gin & Tonic), this is a dangerously addictive service. ambassadorgeneralstore.com
Flat Iron
If you don't have a super-skilled chef to do all the heavy lifting for you in the kitchen, perhaps we could introduce you to Flat Iron Steak group. Self-taught butcher (and founder) Charlie Carroll has made it his mission to offer great steaks to carnivores everywhere… even when his restaurants are closed. Having launched an online shop, Carroll is now selling an old-school, paper-wrapped butcher's box (£90) that includes a signature cut taken from the feather blade, four burgers, four steaks marbled with fat, Dexter beef mince and a roasting joint. Given the quality, you can do pretty much anything you like with this meat and it will still taste delicious. flatironsteak.co.uk
Davies And Brook at Claridge's
There are countless reasons to visit Claridge's – the timeless elegance of the place, the impeccable service, the stunning hotel rooms, the exquisite afternoon tea, the art deco-influenced bar… You could go on and on. But there is now a very, very good reason not to go to Claridge's (apart from the obvious). They deliver! If you live within an eight-mile radius of the hotel, you can now order from Daniel Humm's Davies And Brook and that means the legendary whole roast chicken “to go”. Prepared and stuffed with brioche, black truffle and foie gras (£185, including sides of potato gratin with parmesan and wild garlic, braised hispi cabbage with charred kale and a rhubarb and vanilla tart for dessert) all you need to do is pop it in the oven and wait. Alternatively, you could try the newest menu: salt baked Herdwick lamb shoulder with rosemary, lemon and mint chimichurri. In theory it feeds four… oops. claridges.co.uk
Old Chang Kee
Street food specialists Old Chang Kee started small some 50 years ago with one stall in Singapore and a talent for making curry puffs. If you don't know, a curry puff is Singapore's version of a pie/pasty/empanada/samosa – a spicy, sexy hand-grenade of goodness that is simply unputdownable. To meet demand in lockdown, UK founder Sandra Leong is offering a chilled menu to puff lovers nationwide, alongside a selection of fresh curries. And if that wasn't reason enough to get in touch with OCK, it also does a mean laksa meal kit – Singapore rice noodles, beansprouts, prawns and tofu in a fragrant broth. And they can even send it in the post. Now that's what we call a special delivery. oldchangkee.co.uk
Feast Box
Feast Box is on a mission to get people cooking. Using a subscription-based model for delivery, each week diners can choose up to four international dishes (meat, vegetarian or vegan) in a variety of sizes (from two people to a family of four or five) and they do the rest. Although specialising in Asian food, there is so much choice that you need never eat the same thing twice; from Egyptian koshari, Persian lime stew and Hunan pork, through to Malaysian lamb stir fry, mushroom matar korma and Dong'an chicken. With easy to assemble ingredients with simple-to-follow directions, this is a great way to introduce new flavours and cooking styles into your repertoire. The only thing we're not sold on is the name… then again, it is a feast. In a box. What would you call it? feastbox.co.uk
Blacklock At Home
In a previous life, the original Blacklock basement restaurant in Soho was a lap-dancing club, where men and women gathered to ogle, admire and drool at the feast of flesh before them until they could barely stand. Plus ça change… Today, there are three branches of Gordon Ker's legendary chop shop and each one delivers great service, a fantastic atmosphere and, of course, piles of perfectly prepped food. There isn't much they can do about the first two in lockdown 2.0, but they have sorted the third. Blacklock's “All In” experience includes a mix of beef, pork and lamb chops, moreishly absorbent bread to soak up those meaty juices and a host of sides, including oven-ready beef dripping chips, a kale and parmesan salad (for health), and chop sauce. Get through all that and to round things off there is the legendary white chocolate cheesecake. And afterwards, we recommend a lie down… theblacklock.com
Barbers Bazaar
Award-winning chef Abdul Yaseen certainly has pedigree when it comes to creating Indian food. After moving to the UK nearly 20 years ago, Yaseen has The Cinnamon Club, The Cinnamon Kitchen and Anise on his CV and his latest venture is a very personal one. Barbers Bazaar takes its inspiration from the old food markets in pre-partitioned Pakistan and India, where the two cuisines mingled to such delicious effect and Yaseen has re-created that curry partnership. Blending the spices and cooking styles from both regions, he is producing some delicious new dishes, such as slow-cooked lamb saah bhuna masala, chooza chicken tikka achari and Lahoori beef chapli kebab aur anar. GQ also recommends the Barbers devil tandoori wings. barbersbazaar.com
Rosa's Thai Cafe
Rosa's Thai Cafe isn't owned by Rosa. Rosa doesn't work there. We're not even sure if Rosa has ever been in. Luckily, however, chef Saiphin Moore does own the restaurant chain that started with just one food stall in 2006 (there are now 24 branches nationwide and counting) and anyone wanting a taste of authentic Thai food with a warm and welcoming atmosphere knows where to go. Or at least they did… until lockdown. So if you can't go to Rosa's, let Rosa come to you courtesy of their signature pad Thai kit (£40). Choose from prawn or tofu, get it delivered to your door, watch Moore's simple step-by-step “how to” video and tuck in. rosasthaicafe.com
The Cinnamon Club
There really is nowhere quite like The Cinnamon Club. Located in the Old Westminster Library in London, this is the place to come to rub shoulders with political movers and shakers (and Matt Hancock) in the grandest surroundings with the friendliest vibes, while enjoying some of the most delicious Indian food in the capital. Overseen by celebrity chef and restaurateur Vivek Singh, this is curry reimagined, reinterpreted and redesigned, but with total respect for tradition. It stands to reason, then, that when it created its Feast At Home kits, it would be absolutely jaw-droppingly good. Diners can choose from individual dishes, of course, but why would you when can order a four-course box delivered in temperature-controlled containers and featuring the likes of Madras shrimps, lamb shank rogan josh, Delhi-style butter chicken, 24-hour simmered black lentils, garlic naans… we could keep listing, but we are making ourselves hungry. thecinnamoncollection.com
Lyle’s Provisions Menu Box
At the GQ Food & Drink Awards in 2016, James Lowe was named Chef Of The Year. Having learned his trade at some seriously big hitters – La Trompette, The Fat Duck, The River Café, and St John Bread And Wine – Lowe became a young Turk and then set out on his own and opened Lyle's to much critical acclaim and success. Still going strong, even in the face of compulsory closure, Lowe has launched his version of the “at home” experience in typical understated style. Lyle's Provisions offers outstanding meal kits, immaculately presented (you might actually keep the box) and showcasing the finest ingredients (game from the Scottish highlands, Neal's Yard Dairy cheeses, magnifico mince pies), all delivered with Lowe's characteristic attention to detail and idiot-proof directions. At this rate, we might have to give him another award… lyleslondon.com
Classico Plus from Manteca
Manteca is the restaurant formerly known as the pop-up 10 Heddon Street. Created by the dynamic dining duo of Chris Leach (formerly of Pitt Cue and Kitty Fisher's) and David Carter (AKA Mr Smokestak lightnin'), Manteca is their new permanent home on London's Great Marlborough Street and they make magic happen within. Covid dampened the early buzz around the place, but word was already spreading about the nose-to-tail cooking, flame-grilled meat cuts and their hand-rolled pasta mastery. They've put all that together for their Classico Plus Christmas box, which features their house made salumi selection, smoked cod roe, chicken liver parfait and date jam, goose, cranberry and pistachio sausage and even their own take on a Christmas pudding and amaretti. We do recommend you go "The Whole Hog" and choose one of their rolled porchettas, with apple ketchup and brioche buns. The crackling is cracking. mantecarestaurant.co.uk
Elite Bistro At Home
Twenty twenty might seem like a series of devastating blows, but there has been one silver lining to it all. You can now have Gary Usher’s butterscotch banana loaf and clotted cream delivered directly to your door, which is its own kind of cure. Though we’d usually encourage this behaviour, please don’t beeline for pudding straight off the bat, as the main event – octopus with smoked morcilla and chickpeas and feather blade of beef so soft you could (and should) eat it with a spoon – is equally impressive. Dishes require minimal effort but deliver maximum reward, thanks to clear recipe cards and foolproof plating instructions for the aesthetically challenged among us. Menus go live on Friday morning for nationwide delivery the following Friday and Elite Bistro has recently launched Christmas and New Year’s Eve specials, which, judging by its success so far, are sure to sell out. elitebistrosathome.com
Aktar At Home
Stop whatever it is you are doing right now (no, you weren't just about to do a workout in your garden. Yes, you can pause Netflix), click on the link at the end of this entry, order one of Aktar Islam's curry boxes, then stop eating until it arrives. Islam's multiple-award winning, GQ Food & Drink shortlisted modern Indian restaurant Opheem offers a package of ten traditional curry dishes that are simple to prepare and could feed a family of four until they burst. Offering both meat and vegetarian dishes, rice and breads, you'll wonder why you ever ordered from your local takeaway when this box arrives. And the best part? When your smart-arse friends ask you why you ordered an Indian meal from Birmingham when you live in London/Plymouth/Glasgow etc, you can tell them GQ made you do it… and you won't regret it. aktarathome.co.uk/shop/
Rick Stein At Home
Housewives and house husbands everywhere – take off those old, baggy tracksuit pants you call your lockdown look and get dressed up in preparation for date night. Rick Stein is coming to your place, and you're in for a treat. The seafood septuagenarian still has a glint in his eye, magic in his fingers and a knack for creating delicious dishes that are easy to prepare and mightily impressive to serve. His new range of meal boxes include Indonesian fish curry, a lobster feast and a rustic coq au Riesling menu that is as close as you'll ever get to having Rick in your kitchen cooking up a storm. And for tips on what wine to serve with your food, check out Charlie Stein's GQ wine column for some recommendations. Crack open a bottle of something cold and settle in for the evening. shop.rickstein.com
Ormer At Home
Here's the good news: Great British Menu finalist Kerth Gumbs has been honing his head chef skills at Ormer Mayfair for the past few years, and before that he worked with Tom Aikens and at L'Atelier de Joel Rubuchon – safe to say, then, that he knows his way around a kitchen. Starters include yellowtail ceviche, Jersey crab and beef tartare; mains not to be missed are black cod and a brilliant côte de boeuf with triple-cooked chips; and for dessert, it has to be the Ormer apple crumble. You can even pair your food with wine chosen by Ormer's sommelier Svetovslav Manolev. The bad news? Well, Kerth's food is only available for delivery within a 2–3 mile radius of the restaurant through Supper and Deliveroo. Is it worth moving for? Quite possibly… flemings-mayfair.co.uk
Club Mexicana At Home
From East London street food stall and jaw-dropping residencies to beloved permanent vegan venue in Soho, Meriel Armitage's Club Mexicana has been giving meat-free Mexican-Californian food a good name for a few years now. Their Tofish tacos, Cheezeburger tacos, and non-beef “beef” fully-loaded nachos have all become cult favourites, and now they are offering DIY kits for home delivery. Big portions, even bigger flavours, and they will even supply cocktails to get you and your bubble gang in the party spirit. GQ recommends the Al Pastor kit, which in theory feeds four, but we were still going two days later. Ay caramba is right! shop.clubmexicana.com
Elystan Street
In 2017, Phil Howard was named Best Chef at the GQ Food & Drink Awards for the incredible food he was cooking at his Michelin-star restaurant Elystan Street. Since then? Well, he's only gotten better and is also making culinary magic happen at Church Road and Kitchen W8. Not only that, but during the first lockdown, Phil and co-owner Rebecca Mascarenhas used their skills to cook for the Royal Brompton and Royal Marsden Hospitals' staff. For this next lockdown, fans of Phil can order from E-Street's weekly changing menu and also pick wine and pre-mixed cocktails for the complete experience. The dishes change each week, but keep your eyes peeled for the hand-cut strozzapreti with creamed wild mushrooms, roast rack of lamb with gratin dauphinoise, and of course, the epic sloe gin baba with clementine Chantilly. You can collect direct, and delivery is available for west and south-west London postcodes. elystanstreet.com
Galvin At Home
We are big fans of the Galvin brothers, Chris & Jeff, here at GQ – everything they touch turns delicious. From fine-dining to gastropubs, their family-friendly approach to creating must-visit restaurants has been a breath of fresh air for the British food scene. It stands to reason, then, that when they turned their hands to home-cooking kits, they came up with a system that promises a Michelin star-style meal experience for even novice cooks in just 15 minutes. Featuring a three-course meal, with a choice of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, the Galvin at Home kit even comes with an online tutorial to talk you through the simple assembly process. Date night just got a whole lot more tasty… galvinrestaurants.com
One Fine Dine
When it comes to preparing home-cooking kits for any and all occasions, One Fine Dine are the absolute masters. Having started life preparing food for private jet flights, they have now turned their considerable skills to home entertainment, and when served at an altitude of just 3ft, their meals are even better. Perfectly packaged in compostable and recyclable boxes, their dishes and attention to detail are second-to-none and come with detailed instructions – not just for heating the food, but also with tips on how to present each dish. Duck and chicken liver parfait, North Atlantic blackened miso cod, a dark chocolate sphere for desert… whether you're entertaining your partner or your whole household, you can't go wrong. onefinedine.com
The Grill At Home from The Dorchester
Baby-faced Tom Booton is not only the youngest-looking head chef the The Grill at The Dorchester has ever appointed, at just 27 he actually is the youngest head chef to have held that position in the restaurant’s history. And yes, he is that good. Not content with cooking up a storm at The Grill, Booton has created a “Make It Yourself” menu that is nothing short of sensational. Easy to create, featuring impeccable pre-prepped produce, and with instructions even we can follow, you won’t have eaten this well at home unless you are one of Gordon Ramsay’s children. Stout bread with chive butter and black pudding. Salmon tartare with a light soy dressing. Classic beef Wellington for two with confit shallots and sprouting broccoli. And for desert a fun and clever take on a Double Decker. The only thing they don’t provide is a waiter. thegrillatthedorchester.slerp.com/order
Bocco Di Lupo
Since 2008, Jacob Kenedy and Bocca di Lupo have been serving exciting and delicious regional Italian dishes from the heart of Soho. A brilliant and buzzing trattoria, they were one of the first restaurants to turn their culinary creations into an online offering, and Bocca di Lupo at Home has gone from strength to strength. To celebrate their recent reopening, they have launched a series of monthly changing menus (“In Viaggio Regione”) and diners can also have dishes delivered to their homes. Just choose from their feasts – make it “Campo” (vegetarian), “Maccellaio” (meat) or “Mare” (fish) – and Jacob and his team do the rest. They also offer a suitable bottle of wine to pair with it. Buon appetito. boccadilupoathome.com

If one thing is going to get us through the dark evenings, it’s the prospect of dinner being cooked by Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge. No, not in the flesh (he’s a busy chap), but by delivering delectable ready meals direct to your door. The team have also transformed The Butcher’s Tap into a shop stocked with first-class freezer meals, pantry staples, cellar favourites and freshly baked goods. It’s a limited service (only supplying the SL7 area) but we love Tom and it beats reheating yet another portion of nondescript stew, doesn’t it? thebutcherstap.co.uk
