Use: The amount your rug will be used is also something to keep in mind. “Functionality is often the forgotten key component when it comes to buying a rug,” says McMillan. “Rugs often receive the most wear and tear of any household item.” Make sure to check the details of each rug and whether it's suitable for heavy traffic or for both indoor and outdoor use before investing.

What else should I look for when buying a rug?

We’ve covered a few of the basics above, but there are a few more considerations to take into account. Rugs can be made with anything from wool to synthetics, with each material being better suited to different needs based on how comfortable they are and how durable they’re likely to be. Wool and cotton are some of the most commonly used materials, wool being a long-lasting option that is warm and comfortable and cotton being easy to wash if you have pets or small children (or are just prone to spilling your drinks). There is also the option of silk for a more luxurious feel that can look great in a bedroom and, finally, synthetic, which is normally the most affordable rug material.

Another thing to pay attention to is the pile, which refers to the density of the fibres in your carpet. High/long pile refers to a more shaggy rug, while low/short pile refers to a flatter, less fluffy rug. Beyond personal preference, choosing the right pile tends to come down to how durable you need the rug to be. For high-traffic areas opt for a low-pile rug (they are normally easier to clean), but for a bedroom or living room you should be fine with something more delicate.

What is considered a good quality rug?

When it comes down to which rugs are considered good quality and which aren’t, it really is a case of the materials and fibres being used. Better quality fibres will last longer, especially if you need something super hard-wearing, plan on washing it a lot, or are keen for it to maintain a cosy, soft feel underfoot. And the dyes matter too, as some budget-friendly rugs can lose their colour quite quickly, shortening their lifespan. While you’ll normally get a lot more out of an expensive rug, this isn’t to say that you should only buy one that’s in that category. If you plan on placing it somewhere that doesn’t get too much foot traffic in your house, and don’t have children or pets that would mean you’d need to be able to wash it quite regularly, a budget-friendly rug can be a great way to save a bit of extra money that you can invest elsewhere. It all really depends on your situation!

How we choose the best rugs

Rugs are those wonderful items of furniture that are, yes, practical, but which also allow for totally random flights of aesthetic fancy. What you like will depend on your taste. That said, there are certain things to consider when looking at different rugs, all of which feed into GQ’s selection process: these might be questions of size and shape, as well as pile depth (shaggier rugs are more desirable in some situations than others) and of cost. We look at sustainability, including labour and child safety certifications, and prefer recyclable or long-lasting, well-made rugs. We try to include a wide range of different options to suit every home. And then, of course, we pick the designs that we covet, because we’re only human.

All of GQ’s interiors guides are written by our in-house team of contributing testers and experts, and are edited by Daphne Bugler, British GQ’s Senior Commerce Writer, who has been working at GQ for the past four years, and has written extensively about interiors since 2020. The team regularly talks to experts in a variety of interiors categories to better understand the products we write about and what we should be looking for.
