Rolex’s Datejust is one of the Crown's lower-key models, favoured by icons of laid-back cool such as Harrison Ford and Zac Efron, yet it has long served as an opportunity for the marque to indulge its playful side. While yesterday’s announcements of the meteorite-equipped Daytona and subtly refined Explorer II occupied most of the Watches & Wonders 2021 spotlight, we couldn't help but be won over by the new Datejust 36 models and their palm motif dials. Interestingly, the design isn’t printed but etched using the kind of precision lasers typically reserved for cataract surgery. With summer round the corner, this tropically-inflected watch is an alluring proposition.

The olive-green variant is also bang on trend. From Patek Philippe’s latest “sunburst” olive-green Nautilus to the new Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K in green and gold, via the pastel shades of Oris’ new ‘Cotton Candy’ Divers Sixty-Five, there is simply no getting away from the colour du jour among watchmakers. Rolex’s own take on the style is a little more high-concept but, married with a classic Oystersteel case and bracelet, strikes a chic balance between irreverence and sophistication. Beyond appealing to those in search of some wrist candy to mark their ability to return to warmer climes, we suspect there could be a smart play for the Middle Eastern market at work here as well.

Should you wish to forego the horological hypebeasting, then there are also a few more classically minded DJs with the palm motif on offer. The golden Rolesor (two-tone) version (£8,850) with an Oyster bracelet takes the look luxe, as does the silver-dialled Everose Rolesor model (£9,600) with Jubilee bracelet. Team with a cocktail to complete the ensemble.

For those after a more traditional twist on the Datejust 36 formula, Rolex also unveiled two fluted dial models. The pick of the bunch is another Rolesor offering with a golden dial and Jubilee bracelet (£9,350). Every part of this watch will catch the light – it's a piece for those who like to peacock.

All the new Datejust 36 watches feature their maker’s calibre 3235 movement with a 70-hour power reserve and the super energy-efficient ‘Chronergy’ escapement. Want in? The olive-green model is £5,650 – a commensurately laid-back price, at least in the world of fine watches.
