Map of Eastern Europe AD 862-882 |
Tradition states that in AD 862 Rurik was invited to rule at Novgorod. His kinsmen were given similar (but junior) commands at Izborsk and Beloozero, thereby setting up the initial Rus territories amongst the northernmost Slavic tribes. In 882, again according to tradition, Oleg, another of Rurik's kinsmen, seized Kyiv from two lesser Rus nobles. This settlement in the heartland of Eastern Slavic tribal lands became the chief seat of the Rus princes. For around three generations Kyiv remained a vassal of the two hundred year-old Khazar empire, all the while raiding and conquering the Slavic tribes, many of which seem to have been relatively docile and happy to be united under one banner.
