Map of Scandinavia AD 1000 |
Precisely when a single, unified Swedish kingdom was formed is uncertain. Since the exodus southwards of the Danes in the fifth and sixth centuries, the territory was largely dominated by two larger early kingdoms, of the Swedes and the Geats, along with other more minor groups. With better connections being created between the tribes of the Baltic coast and the kingdoms of Central Europe, more of those tribes were being documented by scholars. But this was the eve of much greater and more direct interest in the Baltic region by German crusaders. A clickable version of this map is available for desktop displays.
