Help me make over my garden!

My garden is in need of a makeover! It is not a huge space but adequate and want to give it a make over!

The slabs were put down about 6 years ago, they have been power washed loads of times but always still look diry!

We painted the fence a light stone colour which i thought would make the garden look bigger, which it does but not sure if i like it!

problem is the next door neighbours awful metal fence which is cream and brown! not sure what i can do there. We also have fencing along the wall of their extension so we don’t have a wall in our garden!

any suggestions / ideas?

Love your garden Sonia. I would paint the fence black, dig up the pavers and put in large beds with oodles of plants and flowers and have a feature at the bottom to draw the eye. You need a ton of plants, bushes and maybe a small shrub or two. It lacks greenery and I am no fan of artificial grass either. If you had the right planting a lot of those fences would not even be visible. I also think the paved area is maybe too large. Consider increasing the size of the grass. I would plant real grass too, it's not a huge area to mow. If you don't want grass consider ground cover instead of the plastic grass. Some shingle areas would provide interest too. Take a picture with you to your local garden centre. I'm sure they would love to help you select some plants. What sort of plants are growing in your neighbours gardens? What is the orientation? I would paint the metal cream fence the same colour as your other fence for cohesion.

I would paint all the fences a pale green sage or similar as i think the grey clashes with the creamy stone of the patio and the garden does lack greenery as isla mentions. One suggestion would be to buy as many agapanthus as you can, as they love having their roots compacted, for the raised planters. they start flowering now and through the summer ,fireworks and black panther are particularly good. the leaves are mostly evergreen too and strong so should cope with the odd ball attack

Your lighting isn't helping as they are pendant lights going straight down and not bouncing the light around. The only things i'd change are the flooring to something light, the tiles ( dated ) and the worktops. If you went for glass in aqua to match the rest of the room and painted white above to match the ceiling it would immediately lift the room. Change the worktops to something like an ivory quartz with reflective qualities and put in strip lights on the ceiling and undercounter lights. Try to match the quartz worktops to the floor tiles and it's transformed. I don't think it's the cabinets that are the problem.

Hi, Many thanks for all your replies. Yes my daughter is six turning 7 this year so lots of wardrobe space will be needed. She has 3 wardrobes now but it’s shared with her sister so two wardrobes would defiantly be needed. Thanks for the update on the Ikea bed, Its a strong possibility that could work. I have been looking at similar options but not as cost effective and I didn’t think of Ikea . I wanted my daughters next bed purchase to follow her though to her teenage years, and I was thinking of either a trundle bed similar to the Ikea bed or a 3/4 bed - but I am limited on space so I am not to sure a 3/4 bed would work. Blue (sofa) and creamy/yellow (walls and to a certain degree carpet) will always fight so something has to give. I think the creamy wall behind the sofa is too light, too sickly and too yellowy. Whilst I'm not particularly keen on the wallpaper, I think the cream walls are throwing it out. If they were fixed, you may be able to keep the carpet, and perhaps add a rug. I don't think painting the walls blue will help either, it won't connect with the wallpaper. If keeping the wallpaper you may want to find a more taupey neutral that blends with the new sofa, old sofa and wallpaper. The curtains are yellowy too. A good plan it to keep to yellows, creams and warm neutrals of go for taupes, greys and blues. Mixing them is very tricky.

I would put a fence in front of your neighbours grotty looking fence to match what you already have. Therefore get it covered it. It stands out like a spare thumb.

You’re definitely lacking colour and planting. I would leave the slabs because that will be expensive and a lot of hard work swapping them. Just give them another jet wash and when they’re dry apply Wet & Forget. You can buy it from many places. I get mine off Amazon. You need to spray it on which is quick and very easy. I use it twice yearly on my decking, son uses it on his slabs and it keeps them clean. Incredible stuff. Doesn’t work immediately but give it a week or so and you can see the difference and it lasts for 6-9 months.

Get some planters. You could paint them different colours. That alone would add interest.

I’m certain that a fence that belongs to your neighbour needs their permission to paint it in a colour of your choice on your side. Many don’t care and won’t even be aware.

Wondered if you might like this idea? Still get the larger garden effect of the pale colour you already have but the darker lower fence will be more grounded and the slabs shown off better. Garden furniture would also blend in against it. Other than that, lots of greenery as everyone else says.

Nice space but where are the plants? Lack of planting makes the fencing scream out Here I Am! My fencing is just a dull beige, but I have so many shrubs, trees and flowers that you can barely see the fencing. You may not be a gardener but anyone can plant some climbers like roses, clematis, climbing hydrangeas to green up those fences. Or try some shrubs like Photinia red Robin, Ceonanthus, Hibiscus, Dwarf Lilac etc. They all provide greenery and flowers at different times of the year. Some plants like sun, some like shade so put the right plant in the right place, then water every evening for several weeks, unless it rains, and they will thrive. Nothing wrong with the paving, it just needs a proper jet wash! My cousin jet washed my sandstone patio and it looked almost like new. He was out there for hours. Now I know it’s different as I love plants so I cram them in everywhere, but does my fencing matter anymore?

Definitely add vertical greenery, such as trellises or tall potted plants, along the fence to camouflage the neighbours fence and think about adding some weather-resistant outdoor furniture and decor to really enhance the space

I agree with everyone else. You definitely need more greenery. Also there is too much hard lanscaping so take some of flags up and get some real grass .. the fences need to be the same colour. I alway go for black; it's looks great with green foliage !
