These Are the Trends Emerging on Houzz Right Now
The 2024 Houzz UK Emerging Summer Trends Report reveals the most searched-for terms, with a few surprises...
From green popping up in almost every room in the house to the return of country style, making space for wellness and reading nooks, to teen spaces and an emphasis on entrances, search data collected on Houzz during the first three months of this year* gives a fascinating insight into our current interiors preferences. Have you recently searched for any of the following?
2. There’s a resurgence in our love for farmhouse style
There’s been a long, slow shift from clean, minimal spaces over the past few years, with maximalism and pattern creeping into our homes, and a firm emphasis on personalisation. But the biggest break-out theme along those lines we’ve seen emerge this year is a renewed love for a softer, more rustic style.
Searches for “country cottage interiors” are up a significant 49%, with “farmhouse bathroom” getting a look-in, too, with a 13% rise in searches. Think tongue-and-groove panelling, in-frame cabinet doors, brass, soft colours, faded vintage textiles and even the odd frill.
Way out front, though, showing our love for country style is rooted in the outdoors, is “country cottage gardens”, up 91%, and “roses”, up a staggering 485%.
Let this sweet bedroom scene inspire ideas around this look, with its antique artwork, floral motifs, soft lines – and, of course, a spray of roses.

3. Garden structures are going up
Sticking with the outdoors, our garden interests this year lie in creating structures in our gardens. From “greenhouse” (up 68%), like this classic Hartley Botanic number, to “raised beds” (up 95%) to “outdoor kitchen” (31%) and “shed” (27%).
A bit of an outlier, but a garden structure all the same, it’s interesting to note that searches for “granny annexe” were up an enormous 87%, suggesting a shift in the ways in which we’re shaping our family living arrangements.

4. We’re creating lovely spaces for our teens
Perhaps it’s the knowledge that our kids are likely to be living with us for longer than ever before*, but it seems we’re investing more thought into our growing children’s spaces. Searches for “kids room” crept up a touch, rising 17%, but for older children the rises were marked.
Searches for “teen room”, “teenage boy bedroom” and “teenage girl bedroom” were up by more than half, at 54%, 53% and 58%, respectively. Personalisation is key in these rooms, and My Bespoke Room has nailed that concept in this cool sleep space.
* The number of families in England and Wales with adult children living with their parents rose 13.6% between the 2011 Census and the 2021 Census, according to the Office for National Statistics.

5. We’re focusing on first impressions
It’s a great feeling to come into a home and immediately see a beautiful space. And it seems this is very much on our minds, as searches for “entrance” are up 65% and “hall” 61%, respectively. Also, either indicating the era of property we live in or an aspiration to that period’s style, “Victorian entrance hallway” is also up 59%.
We’re interested in this area more broadly, too, with notable rises in searches for “front porch” (up 28%) and “bungalow front porch” (up 34%).
Keeping these areas looking good requires a dose of practicality, so, perhaps not surprisingly, searches for “hallway storage” have also risen, and are up by 27%.

6. Leisure time is important
Whatever our household make-up, we’re keen to spend more quality time together at home – or so the data suggests, with a rise in searches for terms around rooms for shared leisure.
Searches for “family room” have risen by 23%. With a focus, perhaps, on sofa time to watch TV together, searches for “media wall units” rose by 42% and “home cinema” crept up by 11%. 29% of Houzz users were also searching for “game room”.
More unexpectedly, though, was the significant rise in the numbers of searches for “music room” – these were up by 43%.
However, homeowners are also looking to find a cosy area for reading or solitary relaxation this year, too, with searches for “reading nook” almost doubling.

7. We’re building in more wellness areas
You might be surprised to learn that searches for “indoor swimming pool” are up by 97%. They’re out of budget for most of us, but they hint at the wider trend for turning our homes into havens for wellness and fitness.
As such, searches for “yoga room” were up a massive 204%, along with “home gym” at 40%. A trend we’ve been keeping tabs on for a while got a boost, too, with searches for “sauna” up 60%.
Is this once-niche Nordic pursuit becoming more attainable for the average homeowner? Certainly we’ve seen a few examples of smaller-sized saunas popping up in bathrooms on Houzz. Is it a feature you’d love to have in your home? Give us your take in the Comments.
