Houzz Call: What’s on Your Refrigerator?
Magnets, menus, children’s art, coupons, perfect-attendance certificates, song lyrics — what is fridge-worthy in your house?
I am hard-pressed to find a Houzz image of a refrigerator adorned like the one from my childhood. I’m talking family photos, schedules, certificates from school, silly magnets picked up on trips, postcards. I have a few theories about why these photos are difficult to find. The first is that popular stainless steel refrigerators repel traditional magnets, and the second is that photo stylists often come in and strip everything away on photo shoot day. Is this a true trend or are there still plenty of these kinds of things on your fridge? Please share a photo in the Comments section and let us see!
Some folks are very clever with how they style their refrigerators. These Scrabble tile magnets made by blogger Atypical Type A can be used to leave messages, share inspirational quotes or plan menus for the week.

Interior designer Annette Tatum put magnets on the backs of these vintage ice cream signs to add mouthwatering charm to this kitchen. If you’re looking for some, she recommends checking out vintage shops, eBay, flea markets and antiques fairs like Round Top in Texas.
They make me hanker for some Graeter’s black raspberry chip ice cream. I wonder if giant kale and celery magnets would inspire me to eat healthier (or not at all)?

I’m asking you to show me your refrigerator, so it’s only fair that I show you mine. Mine is still a work in progress. About a year ago, I finally replaced my 1980s energy-hog white refrigerator that came with the house I bought in 2002 with my very first brand-new one. I had wanted a cheery red refrigerator for 10 years but couldn’t afford what was available until prices dropped recently. When the deliveryman took it out of the box in the street, he said to his partner, rather incredulously, “Um, does she know that this refrigerator is red?” and I laughed.
Anyway, I resolved to keep it clear and lovely. I determined that the only piece from my extensive kitschy magnet collection worthy of it was this one, Liberace in all his argyle glory, strutting his stuff across the appliance. (By the way, Elvis in Hawaii was runner-up but didn’t make the cut — he’s stuck on the side.)

However, things have slowly crept onto the front of my fridge. The first was the lyrics to Peeno Noir by Titus Andromedon from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, ripped out of Entertainment Weekly. ("Peeno Noir, midsize car” is the line that makes me laugh the hardest.)
Then after a trip to London, I just had to hang a postcard of Queen Elizabeth up there. A schedule of the great new exhibits at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art is going to stay up until I get myself over there to check them out.
Then last weekend, my 6-year-old niece, Sammie, wasn’t happy that her purple drawing was hanging sideways on the side of the refrigerator, and she took it upon herself to hang it front and center. By this time next year, you probably won’t even be able to see that my refrigerator is red.

Finally, on the side, I couldn’t resist this portrait that a friend’s daughter, Kendall, drew of me when she was 5. It was immediately after sitting in horrible Route 28 traffic on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod for two hours while she played Call Me Maybe over and over again on an iPhone. It represents what I looked like at the time — much like the figure in the Edvard Munch painting The Scream.
