For large family get-togethers, weddings or group gatherings, having a chafing dish or two on hand can be a huge boon. With a hint of elegance, chafing dishes serve up hot food banquet style. Though they may sound intricate, chafing dishes simply use a water pan found underneath that’s heated by a fuel candle or electricity to keep your food piping hot. If you’re planning a large event and need a way to quickly yet elegantly serve food to your guests, look no further than chafing dishes.

How can I keep my food heated with a chafing dish?

You’ll have 3 choices when it comes to how you heat your food warmers: electric, fuel cans and induction.
• Electric: A great choice for outdoor events, electric chafing dishes simply require access to an electrical outlet. Without a flame to worry about, you won’t need to move food inside if the wind picks up or worry about curious children trying to touch an open flame.
• Fuel: Fuel cans, gel fuel and wick fuel are three different ways you can keep your chafer water dish heated. Wick fuel is clean burning and features burn times of 2, 4 or 6 hours. Gel fuel comes in 45-minute, 2-, 4- or 6-hour options. Fuel cans, or sterno fuel, typically burn up to 2 ½ hours and can be paired up for larger chafing dishes.
• Induction: A more recent spin on cooking, an induction chafing dish utilizes a portable induction range to keep your food heated. The great thing about induction is it only heats the chafer and area underneath it, which eliminates the hazards of an open flame or stray electrical cords.

What sizes of chafing dishes can I choose from?

Depending on your needs, you can find a food warmer in a size just right for you. Chafing dishes come in full-size and half-size, as well as round, which can fall in the middle of the full and half sizes.
• Half-size: 4 to 5 quart capacity. Typically square or rectangular in shape.
• Round: 4 to 7 quarts. Round or oval in shape, includes marmite or soup dishes.
• Full-size: 8 to 9 quarts. Usually rectangular in shape.

What shape is best for my food warmer?

When it comes to chafing dishes, most are rectangular or round in shape. There are, however, other shapes, including round, oval and square.
• Rectangular: Best for main entrees. An oval chafing dish is also a great choice for main entrees.
• Round: Best for sauces, side dishes and desserts. A half-round chafing dish can be used to serve appetizers and sides.
• Coffee urn: Best for coffee, tea and other hot beverages.
• Drop-in: Permanently installed into a counter or tabletop. A great choice if you have the space and host large parties often.
• Griddle: Best for items like sliced meat, sandwiches and pancakes.
• Marmite or soup: Best for soup, stew, sauce and gravy, hot cereals and other liquid items.
• Square: Best for appetizers and sides.
