We chose Paul Clark as our architect for our home in Davidson, NC. The project was to remodel an existing small home of 1300 sq.ft. and construct a new addition of about 1000 sq.ft., including a great room, kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom. We were very pleased--I would say thrilled--with the outcome and found Paul easy to work with. He was a very creative architect, yet attuned to our wants and needs. He was supportive of our desire to use lots of wood and natural stone in building the house, resulting in a very beautiful and light filled home, with a stunning front porch. Many times during the construction process, and since its completion, total strangers have stopped to compliment us on our beautiful home as they passed by. Paul was flexible when we had to interrupt the design process, then ready to come back almost a year later to resume it. We always looked forward to our design sessions--Paul had a way of bringing his own ideas to the table, while staying open to our input. If you are looking for a creative architect with his own vision, and one who will listen to yours as well, Paul is your man. And I should add that he did not exceed our agreed budget, and we were naturally pleased with that. We recommend him highly.

I love, love, love my house. Paul, our architect, was great to work with! For our whole-house renovation and backyard overall, he listened to what we wanted, explained what could and could not be done affordably, and he made so many wonderful suggestions at every stage of development. Even during the construction process when the contractor discovered rotting timbers that threatened to derail the whole project, Paul worked with the framing carpenters to find an elegant (and inexpensive!!) solution. When completed, the house emerged as this beautiful gem, fitted perfectly in our charming neighborhood….I just love it!

Our house came out beautifully. Our architect, Paul Clark of Davidson, North Carolina, designed the house with the back facing a deep woods with the four decks and a terrace encouraging relaxation and the engagement with the natural setting and wildlife. Paul is an expert in Green design and building methods and he certainly lived up to his reputation with our house. The Green amenities include solar-powered water heater, super-efficient insulation, storm water harvesting, native plants in all landscaping, and sustainable building methods throughout construction. Paul visited the construction site often to make sure everything went according to plan. When change issues arose, we looked at all options and worked together to solve all issues. We are very pleased.

Over the years, Paul Clark has designed several houses and one garage apartment for my family. From designing our shoot-the-lights-out dream home to helping us build a small house for rental and later a small in-law garage apartment, Paul showed such great versatility and ability to stay within budget while thinking through every last beautiful detail. His willingness to listen and really pay attention to how WE lived and what we wanted in terms of our space and lay-out was quite remarkable. We found Paul to be patient with our endless ponderings and incredibly creative in giving us something we loved but would never have thought of on our own. His commitment to building beautiful, functional, unique and friendly home environments has inspired me over the years. He truly wanted out family life to be supported and made happier by the architectural design rather than us living around some "vision" or architectural "theory." How refreshing!

We live in an infill house designed and built by Paul. The architectural and design details and quality of the construction are outstanding. In fact, the house is like living in a work of art every day, with the benefit of being functional, efficient and comfortable too. The house is located on a cul-de-sac lot that remained open for nearly two decades as most builders felt it was too challenging. Yet, we really love the integration of the house into the steeply sloped lot with views and access to the yard, small pond, creek and woods beyond. The integration of the house into the landscape not only encourages us to enjoy the natural setting but also welcomes a rich variety of wildlife. When friends visit the house they offer fitting compliments like, “This is like living in a treehouse.” Paul has been very helpful and responsive as we were considering the house and with a few follow-up questions.

Paul Clark was recommended to us by a good friend. We were impressed with his experience and knowledge of construction as well as architectural design as he assisted us with our first project, a stylish carriage house added onto our 150 year-old historically registered home. Years later, when we needed architectural advice on a 6,400 sf two-unit townhouse we were renovating in Providence, R.I. we called Paul. Although he consulted with us long-distance, he helped us tremendously with crucial design decisions and advised us on ways to keep costs down while maintaining the structural integrity and charm of the building. Most recently we consulted with Paul on our latest acquisitions, a center hall colonial built in 1914 and a small 1984 summer house in New Hampshire. Paul is a great listener and has the ability to communicate complicated design concepts in a clear and understandable way for the layman. All our projects are beautiful and well-loved. We highly recommend Paul!

We hired Paul to design our family room addition. Paul was extremely sensitive to our desires. He presented us with a beautiful watercolor rendering of the house with the proposed addition which really helped us get an idea of what it would look like. His attentive, intelligent nature was a pleasure and we always felt like we could ask him any questions and get honest, understandable answers whether it was about costs, construction or design. We have spent more time in that room than all the other rooms and the addition significantly increased the value of our home.

We engaged Paul from CT to design our house and plane hangar on an airpark in NC. I was fearful that dealing with him long distance by phone and e-mail might be problematic; however, that was not the case. We had a rough floor plan in mind; Paul listened to our ideas, offered his own, and brought everything together for what we feel is the perfect house. It was a very pleasant and exciting experience. I would strongly recommend Paul to anyone for any kind of project.

We found Paul Clark in a Cincinnati magazine years ago. We were taken by Paul's work and decided to hire him. He designed a wonderful home for us, a custom house on the lake. Paul did a great job designing the house so that virtually every room has a view of the lake or the city skyline. Also, he cleverly raised the house out of the ground to provide us with better views and yet used the grading and landscaping to make the house appear in sinc with our neighbors' homes. Another thing I really appreciate that Paul did is how he worked so closely with our builder to make sure that we wouldn't feel or hear the extremely high winds we get off of Lake Erie. Paul is customer-focused, is an exceptional listener and implementer and was always willing to make changes per our requests. He was such a pleasure to work with! Our house has such a great feel to it and visitors frequently comment on the flow and the feel of the house. We would highly recommend Paul to anyone who wants a truly custom, personalized home that they can be happy in for years and years.

Paul had already done drawings of the 100+ yr old Farmhouse-style Victorian for the previous owners who were unable to tackle the project.. They gave us the drawings (blue prints) so we contacted Paul. He worked with my vision of renovating and and changing the existing home, include taking down a 2nd floor sleeping porch and creating a full upstairs bathroom. He made many other more minor changes like removing interior doors and closets, moving and resizing windows and moving an exterior door. He reconfigured rooflines to add a second walk-in closet off master bath. The biggest renovation/ new construction was in the back of the house. An existing addition, a bathroom and half of the kitchen were completely removed and Paul patiently worked with me in designing, and redesigning, an extensive project; a large great room and kitchen, full powder room, pantry, mud room area, brick patio and carport. He even designed a custom area for a dog door with it's own ramp. The other major addition was a new freestanding 2 1/2 car garage with a 600 sq foot apartment above it. The town regulates the amount of room allowable for the size of the lot and Paul used every square inch. The apartment is an excellent design, It feels spacious with a large master bedrooms, a small second bedroom/office, a full bath and a kitchen with ample storage off the living room. The upstairs has a dormer with a peaked room that forms a vaulted ceiling. It has large windows which make it sunny and bright. We expected a utilitarian space and we thrilled with the result which can work as a guest house or in-law or au pair apartment. The garage features a work shop area and sauna with three doors. He designed the concrete patio and brick walkways and added a large new section to the wraparound front porch. I asked him to chose the brick for patio and walkways which I like a lot. Also he supplied a source for carved wooden Victorian columns and rails for porch. They are great quality and look perfect. Of course Paul provided schematics for replacement of old wiring, plumbing changes, etc. Paul provided a reasonable estimate fairly quickly and produced drawings in a reasonable amount of time; well under a month. I was impressed that, unlike an architect we employed during a renovation of our former home, Paul did not charge thousands of dollars each time he literally "went back to the drawing board". In my case that happened a lot. He maintained the character of the home and uses some unique ideas such as framing in full size refrigerators to appear counter-depth. Paul was a builder himself before becoming an architect. He helped us bid out the job to 3 companies he suggested. We were happy with the builder we chose. We did not need him much during the construction because ton of the he builders is an engineer with drafting/architectural knowledge and was able to tweak plans as we went. Overall we were extremely pleased with Paul. He was always courteous, flexible, punctual and, above all, extremely patient with changes. We highly recommend him.

Paul recently designed a Quaker Meeting House in Davidson. He worked with us to remodel an existing small house, adding 2,300 square feet in the back, including an octagonal Meeting room. Paul is easy to work with because he is positive, patient, and respectful of his clients' wishes and needs. He is approachable and open to new ideas. He is an excellent draftsman with a keen aesthetic sense. Paul has experience working with town and county officials as well as with builders and contractors. He responds quickly and thoughtfully to emails and phone calls. Paul's work is always thorough and professional.
