When it came time for my wife and I to remodel our kitchen and main floor, we were uncertain how to select a contractor. Since 1996 I have mediated and arbitrated over 1200 matters,80% of which were for construction related problems. I have seen hundreds of bad contractors and unrealistic customers.
Attending our first Seattle Home Show in 2013, we ran across several contractors. Gary Potter was one. We interviewed 3. Mostly on faith, we selected Gary and his team. Gary introduced us to one of his preferred designers, Vawn Greany, a visionary kitchen designer. Together with Gary and Vawn we designed our new kitchen, selected appliances , fixtures, lighting etc all complimentary with each other. Our project involved a complete kitchen/family room demo, moving or eliminating walls, and transforming an older house into a home.
HERE is the first lesson. Take the time to plan your remodel. DO NOT DESIGN AS YOU BUILD. Fortunately Gary requires the project first be planned, scheduled, and expensed. Be prepared for weekly meetings with the team-do not skip the meetings, as they are scheduled for a reason; to keep the customer informed, the project on track and problems resolved.
Let me tell you about Potter Construction: experienced, professional, competent and transparent. Work performed with sense of humor is an added bonus. Gary's goal is to secure a referral from a customer, hence attention to detail while always putting the customer first. The employees are experts in their craft, and they show up on time, every day, every week. Potter anticipates problems, works them out without delay and cleans up the house EVERY DAY. Folks, these are adults you will be working with. People who have been perfecting their craft for 25-35 years. And Gary's team are craftsmen. The finish work is masterful, but so is that which you cannot see.
HERE is another key to why Potter is so extraordinary: Gary has worked out the best of the best Subcontractors: Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing. NO DRAMA with the subs. they show up on schedule, do their work, and come back when and if necessary. The entire process is seamless. Our project had a couple unexpected developments, and they were handled creatively and without delay.
HIRE THIS COMPANY. Hire Gary, and Karl, and Harry and Jason. You will be happy and your remodel will be the envy of your friends. And like my wife and me, you will provide lots of referrals!!
FEBRUARY 2016 REMODEL:
In 2016 we retained Potter Construction to remodel our upstairs. This was an easy choice as they did such a stellar job on our kitchen. Again, the work was flawless: this is the 'no punch list' contractor. As with our kitchen job, Potter assigns one person to oversee the work, coordinate the subs and perform all the carpentry and finish work, installation of fixtures, cabinets etc. This time Riley Ferguson was the main man. Riley is a wonder of human nature, a man accomplished in a variety of construction techniques, organized, detailed, calm, with great ideas and suggestions and always ahead of the next day and week. Riley planned this job to the day, and finished on time. Which was good as we had to move out of the house for 4 months. I must add, the project Super, Karl Coy, was once again guiding us through the process and smoothing out a couple of unexpected surprises from the City. Karl is a wonderful, positive and responsive partner, and a credit to Gary Potter's eye for talent and loyalty.
We also once again retained Vawn Greaney of Collaborative Interiors, to re-design the upstairs, bathrooms, find and secure the cabinetry, and work with us on the finish work. Vawn is so smart; with her designs, everything fits. kind of like magic.
we love working with Potter Construction. But ( I think) we are done with remodeling and contractors for a while! We would hire Potter again.
