2024 Emmys Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie

The nomination round of voting takes place from June 13 to June 24, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 17. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 15 and ends the night of August 26. The 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 15, and air live on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race
While the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie is a bit short on contenders with truly standout performances, the Emmy race for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie is full of them. The distinction here is whether voters will choose multiple actresses from a few specific shows, or pick one favorite performance each from seven different shows.
Two years ago, it was the former, with five out of seven of the nomination slots going to “The White Lotus” Season 1 stars, and the other two going to actresses from “Dopesick.” And then last year the opposite happened, with only “Welcome to Chippendales” netting two nominations in the category, which was extra surprising because that Hulu series did not get a Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nomination.
Ultimately, the vibe this year is somewhere in the middle. Both the “Baby Reindeer” stars Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau, and the “Under the Bridge” stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough feel like a package deal (though Gunning and Gladstone have the edge in terms of who would win).
But then there are individual performances like Sarayu Blue in Prime Video’s “Expats,” Dakota Fanning in “Ripley,” or Aja Naomi King in “Lessons in Chemistry” that just are naturally the specific supporting performance teed up for awards recognition. One could even say that is true of Kali Reis in “True Detective: Night Country” or Jennifer Jason Leigh in “Fargo,” but those two are more so ensemble shows.
But all that said, there is a world where Emmy voters are completely enamored with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” and nominate several of the actresses starring as the women who once orbited Truman Capote. It just does feel a little all or nothing though. The gift and the curse of casting women like Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Demi Moore, Calista Flockhart, and Molly Ringwald is that each one of them could viably be someone’s favorite actress, and that would end with a fascinating vote split.

Hot Streak: Of course, it is the performances that win this Emmy, not the network. That said, Netflix has a solid chance of winning the category a second year in a row given the huge response “Baby Reindeer” has gotten after quietly premiering on the platform in April.
