‘My Old Ass’ Trailer: Aubrey Plaza Warns Her Younger Self Not to Fall in Love in Coming-of-Age Dramedy

Aubrey Plaza is turning back the clock on heartbreak in lovable queer dramedy “My Old Ass.”
The coming-of-age feature stars breakout actress Maisy Stella as 18-year-old Elliott, who is spending her final summer on her parents’ cranberry farm before she heads to college in Toronto. After a drug trip gone awry, Elliott is visited by the older version of herself (Plaza), who warns her to not fall in love with a visiting boy (“Wednesday” alum Percy Hynes White) working on her dad’s farm.
Megan Park (“The Fallout”) writes and directs the feature that centers on Elliott’s awakening into adulthood. Margot Robbie produces the indie film, along with Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Steven Rales.
Sia collaborator and “Dance Moms” alum Maddie Ziegler and Kerrice Brooks co-star. And yes, this isn’t Plaza’s first time, well, time traveling: the actress previously starred in Colin Trevorrow’s “Safety Not Guaranteed.”
“My Old Ass” premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where IndieWire’s Kate Erbland applauded Park’s “care and consideration for the teenage experience.” “The film uses a winning, funny, crazy concept to explore the emotional landscape of a young woman discovering who she is and who she might be someday,” Erbland wrote in the IndieWire review. “While some of the film’s more under-baked narrative elements might distract at times, Park and her cast still use them to build to an authentic, well-earned final act, one that should resonate with asses young and old.”
Plaza also stars in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and upcoming MCU Disney+ series “Agatha All Along.” Plaza told Deadline that she was in production on both projects simultaneously.
“I would literally go from one to the other and would put my [‘Megalopolis’ character] Wow wig on and my Wow costume on. And then the next day, I would go to the ‘Agatha’ set and I’d be dressed as a warrior witch with a dagger and stuff. At one point, when I was dressed in the Marvel character, I snuck onto the ‘Megalopolis’ set and I started harassing Giancarlo Esposito and Adam [Driver] and everyone,” Plaza recalled. “It was absolutely insane behavior.”
“My Old Ass” will be released on Friday, September 13 in select theaters with a national rollout to follow. Check out the trailer below.
