Trump slammed for jetting off to luxury golf resort as US death toll approaches 100,000

There’s one thing that Trump loves even more than tweeting: golf.

In fact, in 2019 the president spent one in five days at the golf course.

Now, in the middle of a pandemic, Trump has caused controversy by leaving the White House for his golf course in Virginia.

Trump was seen by reporters “in his typical golf wear of white polo shirt and white baseball cap … before he departed the White House” for an undisclosed location. He later arrived at his golf club in Sterling, Virginia, where he was pictured playing golf.

Given that the US death toll from Covid-19 is approaching 100,000, people thought it was pretty bad timing for the president to be playing golf.

On Friday Dr Deborah Birx, Trump’s coronavirus adviser, said that there was still “significant virus circulating” in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.

On social media, people weren't impressed that Trump is playing golf right now.

Famously, on the campaign trail in 2016 he told supporters: “I’m going to be working for you. I’m not going to have time to go play golf.”

But Trump has played a lot more than his predecessor Barack Obama, who he often criticised for playing golf too much.
