Plenty of Americans had to make sacrifices on Thanksgiving, as pandemic guidelines said people should not travel or host large gatherings. Cardi B, it seems, did not necessarily heed this advice.

The rapper apologised on Sunday after throwing a large Thanksgiving meal, and tweeting that it was ‘lit’, despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“12 kids and 25 adults over the holidays. It was lit !!” she wrote.

Cardi B immediately faced backlash after throwing a celebration of nearly 40 people at her house. In the run up to Thanksgiving, health officials had warned Americans not to hold gatherings, fearing that the holiday could cause ‘superspreader’ events.

Responding to blistering backlash from fans, Cardi apologised saying:  “Sorry my bad”.  Although she later went on to say that people were “trying too hard to be offended”.

'I spent soo much money getting every1 tested but it felt worth it. I wasnt trying to offend no1,' she wrote.

Some did not seem to find this to be genuine, as one person commented on the Twitter apology: “No one is trying too hard. You had 37 people over your house during a pandemic. Even if you don’t think of yourself as a role model many fans will see your Thanksgiving as not taking COVID seriously.”

Others were just generally unimpressed with the decision to host a giant meal, calling it “irresponsible” and “privileged”:

“Sis I love you but anyone behaving this way during a pandemic deserves to be dragged,” one person wrote.

“Bragging about your large gathering during a pandemic to your millions of impressionable fans who do not have the money that you have to get rapid tests is irresponsible,” another person said.

Some fans were supportive when she decided to respond and apologise: “Stop apologizing. You have been following protocols and people would do the same if they could” one person wrote.

But generally it seemed like this was not a good look for anyone, let alone for someone with such a large following: As Tomas Mier commented, the ‘lit’ dinner “doesn’t sound like something to be proud of”.
