Ashley Zavala

California Capitol Correspondent

Ashley is KCRA 3’s California Capitol Correspondent.

She began covering California politics and government toward the end of Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration in 2018. A proven news breaker, Ashley has been the first to report several developments out of the state capitol, including Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision to end California’s historic statewide stay at home order in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Prior to joining KCRA in July of 2022, Ashley was the state capitol bureau reporter for Nexstar Media Group’s seven California TV stations between San Francisco and San Diego. During that time, she covered major political stories including Gov. Newsom’s recall election, the state’s COVID-19 pandemic response, presidential visits and campaigns, plus historic state policy developments ranging from police accountability to wildfire response. She also did extensive reporting on California wildfires, including the state’s deadliest and most destructive wildfire in Paradise.

Ashley spent the first decade of her career in Columbia-Jefferson City, Missouri. As a student and graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism, her first few jobs revolved around sports, covering Division 1 college and high school football and basketball for a variety of outlets. While working for KRCG-TV, she eventually crossed into news and became an investigative journalist. Some of the biggest stories Ashley covered in Missouri include the devastating Joplin tornado, race-related riots at the University of Missouri, and the historic resignation of Missouri’s governor in 2018.

Ashley is the recipient of several journalism honors, including two regional Edward R. Murrow awards.

Aside from reporting, Ashley serves as the president of the Capitol Correspondents Association of California and is on the board of the Sacramento Press Club, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the next generation of journalists.

Ashley is originally from the Philadelphia area with family roots in Mexico City. When she’s not working, Ashley loves doing yoga, hiking, cooking, and spending time with her two dogs, Raja and Luna.
