More than 12 months have passed since the introduction of the new operating systems led by iOS 3 and macOS Mojave, during which intensive beta testing took place. I also installed the macOS Mojave beta on my Mac, thanks to which I managed to get a pretty good picture of the new Mac operating system in that quarter. So what can I say about the new macOS 10.14 Mojave?

If you follow the scene regarding new operating systems, you surely know that macOS 10.14 Mojave has a full-fledged dark mode (finally). Of course, a visible acceleration of the entire system must not be missing. We also got new and redesigned applications, a change in taking screenshots, and last but not least, so-called sets that you can use to better organize your files. But let's analyze all these news in a little more detail.

From luxurious and modern design…

It is the design that has probably changed the most in the new macOS. I already take dark mode for granted on my Mac and don't even realize that it shouldn't be part of macOS anymore. Personally, I think that dark colors have a greater touch of luxury than the opposite light colors. Mainly, dark colors are more pleasant at night, when you don't have to worry about the bright environment "burning" your eyes. The best part is that Apple they are trying to bring dark mode really everywhere, and when I mean everywhere, I really mean everywhere. It is, of course, part of the interface of third-party applications, and where dark mode is supposed to be, it is usually there. However, it is true that, for example, in Photoshop, several versions of macOS already show me a bright spot when saving a file that would Apple could fix. So the dark mode works more than well.

Another novelty related to design are very pleasant dynamic wallpapers. Maybe you're not quite sure what you mean by dynamic wallpaper. This is a set of 16 wallpapers that dynamically change depending on what time it is. If you open your Mac in the morning, you can look forward to a beautiful, bright wallpaper that will awaken your creative spirit. In the afternoon, the wallpaper begins to darken slowly, and as soon as day and night begin to overlap, the wallpapers are eerily dark. However, I personally had a problem with the dynamic wallpapers - they simply did not work for me and did not rotate. Only a complete reinstallation of macOS solved it. But I think only a small fraction of users had the same problem. Maybe I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I dedicate the last paragraph in the "design" section to the redesigned App Store. Personally, I think that the newly redesigned App Store is what Apple failed at all with macOS Mojave, and according to other reviews on other portals, I think I'm certainly not alone. The user interface of the new App Store may seem simpler and clearer at the moment, but unfortunately I have to say that it is not. I don't know why, but I just don't like something about the new App Store. Most likely, it is unnecessarily inspired by the App Store from iOS. In any case, Apple is fully aware that the new App Stor does not fully satisfy users and is working hard to fix it. We'll see with what Apple will come

macOS Mojave also saw the premiere of the Dictaphone application – i.e. a kind of recorder that works similarly to iOS. The Home, Actions and News applications were also introduced. The latter, however, is not available for the Czech Republic.

…via sets and redesigned screenshots…

Sets (perhaps a slightly more pleasant name in English - stacks) will help you with better organization of the desktop. Personally, I try to keep my desktop clean, so I don't use this function a lot, but I think that there will definitely be users who like the sets. Let's say you have several files on your desktop - from images to documents to, for example, movies. If you choose to use sets, all files that are of the same type are merged under one set. After using sets, you won't have a million icons on your desktop, but only a set of images, documents, videos, etc. In a way, sets slightly remind me of grouping notifications in iOS 12.

If you decide to take a screenshot in macOS Mojave, it might feel a little like you're working with iOS again. After taking a screenshot, a screenshot preview will appear in the lower right corner. If you click on the preview, you can easily edit it using annotations before saving. But the preview is not only for you to edit the screenshot. Personally, I very often use the preview when I want to send a screenshot to someone. I simply grab the preview and move it to the Messenger window - so I don't have to wait for the screenshot to save and then search for it on my desktop. The same applies locally to the system itself - if you do not want the screenshot to be saved to the desktop, simply grab the preview with the cursor and move it to where the resulting screenshot should be saved. In this case, I have to Apple praise for the inspiration from iOS.

...right down to acceleration and greater fluidity

It's been about a quarter of a year since the first beta version, and I have to say that in that quarter of a year, Apple managed to perfect macOS Mojave almost to perfection. When I installed the first developer beta, I honestly regretted it for a moment. The whole system was choppy, not smooth, and sometimes I really wanted to take the Mac and throw it out the window. Constant application crashes, overheating of the Mac even when nothing was happening - this was my daily routine from the beginning. However, I must say that Apple managed to catch all the flies and now macOS Mojave works as it should.

In my opinion, compared to High Sierra, it is noticeably faster and, above all, smoother. I personally can't judge, but I think that following the example of iOS 12, macOS Mojave will also run much better on older Macs and MacBooks. If any of you have macOS Mojave installed on an older Mac, be sure to let us know in the comments if it's better or worse than the previous version of macOS.

záver

In conclusion, I would say that macOS Mojave is not bad at all. Personally, I'm slightly scarred by the first versions of this operating system, so I'm not as positive as I should be. However, if you are going to switch to the Mojave from the High Sierra "until" now, then I fully approve of this move. There's really nothing to worry about - you'll love the new dark mode and dynamic wallpapers. The redesigned functionality of screenshots is also very successful. Last but not least, you can look forward to a generally faster and smoother system operation. The only thing you might not like is the new App Store - but let's face it, we don't spend that much time in it on Mac, so we'll definitely give it a try.
