Enhanced data protection on iCloud increases the number of categories protected by end-to-end encryption to 23. Added categories include device and message backups, iCloud Drive, notes, photos, reminders, audio recordings, Safari bookmarks, shortcuts, and Wallet tickets. End-to-end encryption thus covers most of the data, and practically only three categories remain that are not protected by end-to-end encryption, namely e-mails, contacts and calendars, due to the necessary interoperability with other applications and systems.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings – your name – iCloud
- Tap on Advanced data protection
- Tap Turn on advanced data protection
If you haven't set up a recovery contact or recovery key yet, you need to set up one of these things. This can be done despite the activation of advanced data protection by selecting the Account recovery item after the prompt, continuing to Set up account recovery and then filling in everything necessary.
If you're wondering why this is (that is, why the above needs to be set), it's because by activating it you turn on end-to-end encryption, which in other words means that the encryption keys are deleted from Apple's servers and remain only on your device. So if you enable the feature, the recovery will be up to you.
You just need to be able to read 😎
Unfortunately, if you own an older device within one account (for example, AW1 in my case) then you are out of luck, as this function will not allow you to turn it on without removing AW from your account 😞
