The macOS app ecosystem continues to amaze us with apps that are like mirror-polished Japanese kitchen knives: functional and highly sophisticated. But in the flood of software for Apple computers, you'll also find a number of applications that, although they are heard a lot, may not be nearly as good as they are made out to be.

The discussion platform Reddit is a famous well of diverse opinions from people from all over the world. Which apps are the most overrated according to Reddit users?

CleanMyMac X

Mac users on Reddit believe that CleanMyMac X is the most overrated app ever. They argue that macOS doesn't need the help of a third-party system cleaner (let alone a paid one) to stay nimble and reliable. However, opinions on CleanMyMac X vary. There are those who do not allow it, and there is also a group of users who prefer a combination of other, often unpaid, applications.

Fantastical

Fantastical is also one of the most overrated Mac apps according to users. The company's decision to switch to a prepaid model with the release of version 3.0 angered many longtime fans of the calendar management app, some of whom have since switched to alternatives like BusyCal. But in this case, the problem will really be in the price rather than in the functions or appearance of the application.

Cleanshot X

CleanShot X bills itself as the ultimate screen capture tool, but it apparently failed to convince many Mac users, as it was also named one of the most overrated apps by Reddit users. The truth is that most ordinary Mac users only take screenshots for their personal needs, so the functionality of the built-in screenshot tool in macOS is fully sufficient for them. But according to its creators, CleanShot X is not aimed at ordinary Mac users, but rather at people who regularly take, edit and share screenshots for work purposes.

Warp

Lovers of advanced Mac features appreciate the ability to interact with the macOS operating system using text commands, but see little point in fancy terminal emulators like Warp that try to do more than they possibly should. When it comes to the Terminal, and the Unix basics of macOS in general, users generally just prefer the simplicity that Warp doesn't offer. Instead, it tries to improve the terminal experience by adding a whole bunch of other features like cursor scrolling, completion menus, natural language command search, and more.

Google Chrome

Could Google Chrome, the world's most popular web browser, be one of the most overrated Mac apps? A surprisingly large number of users on Reddit think so. Google Chrome undoubtedly offers a lot of advantages, but many people are bothered by the way in which, compared to other browsers, it burdens the system resources, especially on older Macs.

ray cast

Raycast is only a few years old launcher that can be expanded with third-party extensions, but not everyone is excited about it. Some users feel that it doesn't offer anything that older and proven applications like Alfred can't handle.

canary mail

The macOS operating system offers its own email client, and there are also many third-party alternatives. Canary Mail is one of them, but quite a few Mac users are convinced that this freemium app with subscription paid plans is not worth it.

Things

Things is widely hailed as the best task manager for the ecosystem Apple, but not everyone seems to agree. Why? Because it costs a lot of money to get an app for each platform, plus there are quality free cross-platform alternatives like Microsoft To Do.

Ulysses

It seems that there are now more Markdown editors for macOS than there are Mac users who can write Markdown documents without instructions. While it's great to have many options to choose from, sometimes lesser-known options don't get the attention they deserve. This is not the case with Ulysses, which is often recommended and, according to some users, unjustifiably. The Ulysses application has a number of indisputable qualities, but according to users, the primary problem here is again its price.

Magnet

Window management is not a strong point of macOS - however, this should at least partially change with the arrival of the macOS Sequoia operating system. Many third-party apps are trying to fill this gap, and Magnet is so popular that ho Apple even recommended. Apple but what it doesn't tell you is that there are many excellent free alternatives outside the garden wall of the App Store. Users praise Rectangle, for example.

Finally

These are just a few examples of Mac apps that some users consider to be overrated. It's important to remember that these are just opinions, and what one person sees as a waste of time and money may be a necessary part of their workflow for another. The best way to find out if the app is right for you is to try it out for yourself. Most apps offer free trials or limited-feature versions to help you decide. Which macOS applications do you consider to be overrated, and which, on the other hand, are you not allowed to use? Let us know in the comments.
