The iOS 8 operating system was introduced in June 2014 and released to the public three months later alongside the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. In addition to these, it was compatible with iPhone 5S, 5C, 5 and 4S, iPod touch 5th and 6th generation and iPad 2nd-4th generation. generation, iPad mini 1.-3. generation and with the first two iPad Airs. The system brought, among other things, a programming interface for communication between applications and a cross-platform system (Mac, iPhone, iPad) called Continuity, which allowed communication between devices in different product categories, such as the ability to receive calls and reply to SMS messages on the Mac and iPad. This system included a Handoff feature that allowed users to start a task on one device and continue it on another. Other changes included Spotlight Suggestions, which offers more detailed search results, Family Sharing, which allows a family to link their accounts to share content, an updated QuickType keyboard with predictive text input, and last but not least, deeper integration of third-party developer apps, including support for notification widgets center and the ability to create keyboards that users can use to replace the iOS keyboard.
