At the end of the day, you have one job: take care of your people. Do you have an obligation to the company? Of course. But never at the expense of the men and women you support: your employees. And that extends beyond the office. After a major storm came through our region, I called each of my team members in/along the path to ensure they and their families were safe, despite the very late hour. In a recent review, I received feedback from one of them that no manager in his 20+ year career ever showed that kind of care/concern for him as a person. He was very appreciative.

1 Define Goals

To start, clearly define the goals of your computer networking project. This involves establishing what the project aims to achieve, such as improving network speed, expanding coverage, or enhancing security. With these objectives in place, you can develop a roadmap that outlines the steps needed to reach them. Ensure that these goals are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This clarity helps each team member understand the end game and their part in getting there, which is essential for maintaining alignment and focus throughout the project's lifecycle.

As you set goals, remember to articulate to the team the business drivers behind the task. Generally speaking, it’s far easier (and stickier) when you align tasks with “the why.” (Plus, understanding the problem to be solved can also prompt different, perhaps better, ideas.)

Once goals are set, assign specific roles to your team members based on their expertise and the project's requirements. In computer networking, roles might include network architects, systems engineers, security analysts, and support technicians. Clearly defined roles prevent overlap of responsibilities and ensure that each team member has a distinct area of focus. Consider opportunities to grow interested team members by tasking them outside of their area of expertise (with alignment to SMEs for support, of course). This could broaden the skill set of an engineer, or it could help strengthen mental muscles that haven’t been flexed for a while. (I learned this when I asked my lead engineer to perform a password recovery on a Catalyst switch.)

If your team doesn’t initiate opportunities for collaboration, create them. Assign them, and make them accountable for reporting to you their plan for distribution of tasks. And never, ever, ask them to do anything you wouldn’t be willing to do.
