Both professionals in the field as well as donors can make a larger philanthropic impact when they align with their values. Most individuals have already created a legacy with giving while they are living. Reflecting on the organizations you have already given to - whether time, talent or treasure, will help you learn if you have a pattern with your giving to causes and also which gifts have provided you the most joy. You can also consider what has impacted you in a meaningful way in your life to define some of your values.

I always said I need to align with 80% of the focus of any philanthropy or living donor i go to work with. You are never going to be 100% aligned with anyone, but I find the 80% rule worked for me in my career.

This is a great point - organizations do approach how they support philanthropy in different ways. You can also utilize Guidestar to review nonprofit 990s and gain insight into the impact they are making with their programs and/or grantmaking.

Philanthropy requires a diverse set of skills ranging from fundraising and grant writing to project management and stakeholder engagement. Assess your current skill set and identify any gaps that may need bridging to advance in this field. Multi-sector and multi-discipline philanthropy is the most impactful - donors who have a trusted team of advisors are able to achieve their philanthropic aspirations. Financial services and legal services advisors are also key influencers and can play a significant role in philanthropy. The American College of Financial Services, an accredited college, offers a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy designation which supports financial planners, estate attorneys and also nonprofit professionals support philanthropy. The best way to earn this designation is through a Study Group which allows you to also network with other philahthropy professionals and experts.
