For example, when the CEO starts a meeting at 9:00 AM exactly, attendees are prepared to begin at 9:00 AM and not arrive at 9:02 AM. This is a simple example, but one that shows the influence executives have on work culture.

Recognition does go a long way. I supported a Senior VP who had 1000's in his reporting structure. He requested that his direct reports provide him with the names of individuals from their teams who deserved recognition by the end of each Thursday. Every Friday, he personally called these individuals to thank them for their contributions. This costs the company some time from an executive but is priceless to the person on the other end of the call.

I often talk about when I see something, or am thinking of someone to stop and give them a quick text or email. It’s the human side of see something say something. Recognizing efforts and hard work is always appreciated, but being thoughtful and thought of goes a long way. It proves the individual is valued, and you’re thinking of them because they are.

I love to surround myself with people who are smarter than me, or have a differing towering strengths. This makes it easy to be curious and collaborative. Regularly communicating with team members because you care is not only vital in confirming alignment, but investing in their success ultimately makes me more successful.

While many recommend valuable ways to attract and retain talent, I’d recommend something additional for entrepreneurs / start-ups. Early phase companies often can’t afford the same wages, benefits, or perks as established companies. That said, if employees and leaders are open to it, these companies offer immense professional and personal development. At a start-up, employees and leaders get to witness their impact firsthand - it is tangible and visible. They get to build, create, and move in new ways that push yet develop them. But here’s the catch - to retain employees, it’s important to be transparent in the interview process about the company’s stage and the emergent nature of a start-up culture. It’s not for everyone but many love it!

State your “code of arms”, your CREDO and vision for the future and own it! We need more entrepreneurs LEADING with ownership and elegance towards a better future. Great people are magnetic and infect others with their vision and ideals. Declare it! And have the backbone to fight for it!:)
