I believe that education in earning degrees and certificates helps with the foundation. But experience plays a huge role in credibility. Also, having honesty, integrity, and proving that every single time is another huge factor in credibility. Remember, no one is going to believe someone who is a liar, who spreads lies, who puts others down, and someone who takes all the credit for someone else’s work and ideas.

To establish yourself as an industry expert and thought leader as a consultant, prioritize building credibility. Start by acquiring in-depth knowledge in your field and staying updated on current trends and innovations. Pursue advanced certifications, attend workshops, and engage in industry conferences to expand your expertise. Apply this knowledge practically by solving real-world challenges for clients, demonstrating your competence and effectiveness. Remember, credibility is built not only on knowledge but also on delivering tangible results and cultivating trust with clients, solidifying your reputation as a trusted advisor and leader in your industry.

Hands down, one of the most impactful things you can do to increase your credibility and meet the people who will promote your thought leadership is speaking publicly. I became a regionally known expert in product management and agile software development by speaking at user groups and conference events in my area. I now field global requests for virtual summits, podcasts and other speaking opportunities in the career space that I've shifted to. It doesn't have to be hard. You can start out by creating a single presentation on a topic that interests you and is important in the industry and offering to deliver it to a small audience. I've presented to groups ranging from 5 to 500 in my career.

Think about other collaborative ways to share knowledge - you don't have to dive into all of these things as solo projects. Team up with a colleague, mentor, or another industry leader to co-write or to create other content together. Collaborative articles on LinkedIn - just like this are another great way to get started in sharing content, ideas, and insights.
