Choosing the right specialization in Live Events requires careful consideration. Start by assessing your skills, interests, and experience to identify areas where you excel. Consider the market demand and competition for each specialization as well. Additionally, seek advice from industry professionals or mentors who can provide insights based on their experience. Lastly, trust your instincts and choose a specialization that aligns with your passion and long-term goals.

I think those in the event industry should take on various roles within their career if they want to be successful. As an Event Planner, I've learned what skills are needed as a Photographer in capturing the perfect shot. I've learned marketing, design, how lighting plays in a room and changes color and the list goes on. It's key that you understand what your desired role is and also what other roles play into that role. Learn those as you learn your main role.

Just like when planning events, it's important to understand the market for your specialization. One thing to keep in mind though when starting to specialize in one area of Live Events is to not only understand the market but also to choose a specialty that has transferable skills to other areas. When COVID happened, many Live Events professionals found themselves either out of work or having to pivot to other areas. An example would be Live entertainment specialists (think concerts) who possessed skills in production such as light, sound and video were able to pivot to the digital events industry easier.

Live events is always evolving, best practices, audience trends and technology are changing. By focusing on your education you can stay ahead of the curve in the industry. Think about 20 years ago, much of the marketing for Live Events was done via print media or e-mail campaigns. While those marketing mediums are still valuable in the industry, the rise of social media and influencers has changed how we market events to a wider audience. Taking time to learn to harness new tools and technology is critical to continued success in a rapidly growing industry.
