Here's how you can effectively communicate with models during a photoshoot.

Part of directing a model is knowing how. If they are a "Mover", a "Giver" with grace (Rare in most models) then your job as a director is just point to a spot you want/need the model to stand and tell them OK or we're shooting and they will start to gracely move and give looks you can then easily capture. Never say "you are doing this wrong", tell or show them what you want them to do. With a model that is not a mover, you will need to say "Change please", or move. Bring examples of a great model you have seen in a magazine & show your model what you are looking for them to do. Just tear them out of a mag. It will take a good while to become a good a director.

Make clear declarative statements about what the goals are. What do you want these images to say? How do you want this person to be represented? Make sure you and everyone in the photo is on the same page about this.

Be a human being and let the people in front of the camera know it's okay to be a human being. People will often apologies for moments of "imperfection" if the laugh when they "aren't supposed to" encourage them this is not only okay but a great way to get closer to your goal! Comfort is key and people are comfortable when they can genuinely express themselves and have authentic interactions with the photographer.

If a photographer says, “Turn to the left” does that mean turn your body or your face? And is that your left or mine! Directions and crystal clear communication is key when working with any client. It puts them at ease, knowing you are the professional and it keeps them from having to guess your wishes while wearing makeup and sometimes even an elaborate outfit.

Be specific. Be be specific. If you want someone to turn their head and not their body, what will happen when you say "turn to the right?" could be just the head, could be head and body, could be just the body. "Turn your face towards your right shoulder." Is a much clearer way to get what you want. Also mirroring is great. If you want them to turn their face towards their right shoulder, show them by turning *your* face towards your left shoulder. People are usually very good at mirroring movement in this way.
