Here's how you can effectively communicate your research findings during an interview.

One needs to help the interviewer to understand the background and motivation behind the research. And also need to explain why this particular work is important and how it addresses a specific question or problem or fits into the broader field.

Keep your research statements to bullet points. But be willing to answer questions. It helps also to have printed copies of research so they can see your figures.

The key word is communication - the goal should be to create an awareness, appreciation and understanding of your research. Ultimately, your audience must be able to engage, so: 1. Know your audience: Understand who they are, their level of expertise, and what they care about then sound familiar to win interest. 2. Simplify complex concepts: Avoid using jargon and technical terms that might confuse your audience. 3.Tell a story: People remember stories better than facts and stats. Stories allow your audience to see themselves in your presentation; its a tool for connection and a weapon to illustrate the impact in research. 4. Be authentic: there is no gain in becoming a copy; people love "unique" and you are unique without trying.

Understand how methods used in your research can be used to solve other related or unrelated questions. This demonstrates the ability to apply skills in numerous manners.

Use anecdotes and stories that your audience can relate to and use real life examples if applicable. The information will be retained more if it's meaningful to your audience.

Understanding the length of time you have, the setting, and your audience is paramount to giving an effective talk. In giving a talk, I have found that less is more. Do not overwhelm your audience with busy PowerPoint slides full of animations or text, as they can distract from your overall points. Remember: your audience will only take away a small fraction of your talk, so make sure that you circle back to 1-2 major points.

It is important to remember that you are telling a story. It is important to hold the audiences hand when sharing your findings. I find it important to share background about you before introducing the research questions so it is clear why this research is important. Additionally, make sure that the content on the slides all connect, so you are constantly refreshing the audience on details that you have previously introduced.

Avoid jumping back and forth in between topics, hold questions until the end and have rehearse your presentation ahead of time. You want to make sure your audience can follow your research in a cohesive manner.

Consider presenting the results first and then explaining how you arrived at the results through the methodology. This of course depends on the audience but if this is a non-scientific audience presenting results first can help anchor the audience in the context of the interview.

There needs to be a good balance between using visual aids to illustrate a topic and talking about it. Even if you can show all results in a chart, it doesn't mean everything belongs in one. Rehearse your presentation ahead of time and find the points where having visual aids would be most impactful and relevant and use that to structure your talk.

If you use visual aids, be sure to have them prepared and ready to go before you go into your interview. If you do not have access to a laptop or tablet, do not try to use visual aids on your phone. In those instances, offer to send the visual aids in your follow-up email after the interview.

If using a PowerPoint have notes present in the notes section. Practice while reading notes, then gradually practice looking at the notes less and less. Ensure your notes are clear. Practice in front of a mirror or webcam to monitor body language.

When practicing your findings presentation it may be helpful to present to peers or other colleagues who have a general understanding of your research. This way they can provide suggestions on how to ensure that you are articulating your findings in a way that is clear and is understandable by those who may not have a deep understanding of your research topics

Every presentation is restricted by time. In a perfect world, you can outline every detail of your research. However, you must decide what about your research findings are the most significant for the interview or presentation. By documenting what areas of the presentation may require further clarification, you can anticipate the kinds of questions you'll receive from the audience. For example, if the methodology was skimmed over, you can anticipate that someone will ask you a question about your methodology.

Anticipating questions by your interviewers is key to preparing for a good interview. Understanding how your research applies to the position you are interviewing for, or if applying to another lab, understanding how your research aligns with the stated research goals of the prospective group are critical in anticipating some of the questions that you will be asked.

People want to know what to do with the data, not just what it means. Have a few "here's next steps for everyone" points to share. What can and should the average person do with this information? What does it meant to them? Why should they care about continuing to support research in this area?

For social science research dissemination be sure to not gloss mentions of racial/ethnic or other disparities in the background section or findings and result sections. Be sure to highlight root causes that may have led to disparities. Not bringing up or giving a nod to root causes unfortunately can reinforce stereotypes to audience, whether you think root causes are well known or not.
