I prefer clearly defining the goals and objectives using criteria correlated to team member responsibilities. A comprehensive kick-off meeting introduces the goals and objectives, and regular updates through meetings, emails, or project management tools provide visibility throughout the team for progress and any changes. Additionally, encouraging feedback through all the touchpoints provides perspective and identifies possible issues. Aligning the goals with the team members’ daily tasks generates a sense of purpose as the team’s effort moves the goal meter.

To avoid the tag of 'micro-managing', I prefer to set expectations by letting the team know to provide updates within specific timelines e.g. weekly updates. This way the team takes ownership and we can discuss progress during 1:1. An exception is if there is a critical issue that I need to be aware of to catch immediately/help resolve - no surprise rule.
