Here's how you can effectively update your boss on your research progress.

I have found it helpful to have both analyses ready to go. This is because when I have presented the big picture, the audience wants to know how it will be implemented and what metrics to capture. When I presented the operational level details, they ask for the big picture strategic level impact

In my view, there is a difference between updating a decision maker in the company (who may be more outcome focused) versus someone, who may also be your superior, but is more process focused. The former is interested in the “so what” of any research / analytics…the latter may wish to know the “how” before the so what. So, I suggest you reflect on who the audience is, think about their goals and what they would value from your work. This way you can customize what you present and in which order.

Be sure to present a refined data and not just throwing the raw data to your boss. He probably hired you to make his life easier. Ensure you do just that! Process, clean-up and then present beginning with the most important piece of information. Also be ready to share your thoughts about unexpected data trends.

So with gathering of data, it is important to set your priorities right. Before meeting your boss, you need to make sure, all the data gathered is set. You need to make sure you sent the right data. Go straight to the point.

Schedule brief, regular check-ins to share key updates on your research. Focus on important findings, any obstacles you’ve encountered, and next steps. Keep your updates concise and data-driven, using visuals if possible, to clearly communicate your progress and maintain alignment with your boss's expectations.

When establishing goals, it is essential to categorize them into main objectives and specific objectives. These objectives must be attainable, as all actions and endeavors should align with these defined goals.

I clearly define the goals and objectives of my research at the beginning of the update. This provides context for my boss and allows them to understand what I am working on.

In my experience, I usually start with the recent things I do (e.g., collecting the data, reading some materials) and then share the results (e.g., finding new arguments about the topic, getting enough sample). After that, I will share the significant of the results to the study (or the subject that been discussed). Sometimes, I will also share the obstacles/challenges that I face on and discuss it with my supervisor how to address the challenges. For closing, I will share my action plan and initiatively make a future appointment plan.
