Here's how you can enhance your leadership skills to excel as a healthcare manager and secure that promotion!

It is only natural that empathy should be one of the core attribute we must possess in healthcare as professionals. The average person seeking medical attention in whatever form is in some form of pain or discomfort. It is expected that we should offer empathy to them in the process of providing solution(s) to their problem. Once you can do this as a leader in healthcare, your followers or subordinates will practice same naturally.

- An example I've seen is a manager who senses personal problems of the employee and shows some flexibility (early leave etc.)

One of the important things we focus on as leaders in military healthcare is our "human factors". We interview each new arrival to the team to surface any stressors. Our multidisciplinary Human Factors Council screens team members who score high on stress scales to determine if there are programs or accommodations we can offer. It's important to us that our staff is ready and not distracted unnecessarily. This helps to build trust in leadership and keeps us aware of small problems before they get big.

Empathy is the heart of the Team. It is the responsibility of the Leader to build a caring environment so people can grow. If the Team feels good, great things will happen!!

Building relationships with other leaders and staff paves the way for a smooth transition into higher level leadership roles. leadership skills, exceptional outcomes and educational experience are essential components of leadership development. Yet, they may be trumped by lack of productive connections with decision makers. Literature is filled with cases of bad bosses who made it to higher levels by their mere social merits with higher ups but fail miserably in leading or creating successful teams. Their objective is self focused but they were able to create the correct or suitable environment (although transitory) to showcase themyas the right choice. Introvert leaders usually take the backseat in teams that have these individuals.

When we are able to make our team understand (about the vision, goal, objective, etc). We put a solid foundation for them to reach it. The only way we have to achieve this is an effective communication skill. The team will easily crumble if they cant communicate well.

One of Healthcare complexities, is integration between personnel of different professional backgrounds, every profession has its own technical language. Bridging the gabs and getting synchronicity between clinical, admin, quality and finance teams governing bodies , etc…, is essential to delivering high quality l, safe and sustainable health services. Clear communication is the backbone of synchronicity between teams. Using simple and direct terms, avoidance of jargon languages, active listening and close communication with feedback are essential skills to fostering clear communication.

When people understand the "Why" behind a new policy or procedure they are more willing to help and make it successful. Communicating clearly and effectively with that Why goes a long way in getting your team on board

1. Develop and maintain comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures for all critical processes. 2. Implement cross-training. 3. Conduct regular internal audits to ensure compliance with policies and identify areas for improvement.

Adjust to Your Audience: • Know Your Audience: Tailor your language, tone, and level of detail to the listener. • Consider Their Perspective: Think about what they need to understand and how they might perceive your message.

Stay Curious: • Ask Questions: Be inquisitive and seek information about topics you are unfamiliar with. • Expand Interests: Explore new areas beyond your usual interests to gain a broader understanding.

To lead by example: • Healthcare leaders should possess expertise, communicate effectively and compassionately, delegate tasks strategically, and uphold integrity. • They should stay updated on advancements, prioritize information, and promptly convey critical details. • Leaders should leverage team strengths, foster a positive work environment, and exemplify trustworthiness and honesty. • Leaders can build meaningful relationships through compassion, meeting others' needs and achieving facility goals. • Encouraging continuous learning and professional development is crucial in the ever-changing healthcare field. • Leaders should exemplify ethical practices, guiding decisions and being accountable for their actions.

Simply because action speaks louder than voice, deeper than promises. Lead by example is a form of action we need to show our team to gain their willingness to follow us as a leader.

Leading by example is crucial, I always lived by the motto of, I'd never ask my staff to do something that I wouldn't do myself.

Fifth goespel is a living example and the best leaders are the one who leads by example. This is building character before preaching to others.

Leaders build other leaders by giving employees opportunity and allowing for failure. When they fail, the environment must be safe enough for them to feel supported in the failure and the resilience to problem solve. Growth cannot happen without failures. The question is, “Has the leader provided opportunity and a safe environment to fail?”.

For me, this is one of the most important elements of leading. I can write for days about fostering growth in employees, taking people with you, and how an effective leader will, through investing in others, ensure business continuity, but to add onto this, one needs to foster growth for oneself as well. Being aware of your subconscious bias, your shortcomings and areas of improvement, as well as what you excel in, and actively focusing on working on it and improving will lead to sustainable leadership that inspires others!

Fostering growth in individuals and teams involves creating an environment that encourages development, learning, and achievement.

Showing your team that you have their back in their personal development by asking about their dreams, goals, and ambitions shows that you care about their development. Helping them get the resources needed to follow those goals, dreams, and ambitions means more though.

In my experience, cultivating a proactive approach to problem-solving. Anticipate potential issues and have strategies in place to address them.
