Every phenomenon one comes across could have a lesson to teach and may not be directly related to one's domain of work. I am an engineer by profession and not a historian. But like any other professional, I need to manage my resources and keep my team motivated. One of the ways to keep my team motivated without internal conflicts is to make the team members inter-dependent and make every member including the junior most member feel important and respected. Records of military histories reveal that the greatest generals were those who respected and cared for every soldier under their command and who led from the front. Such units had the best cohesion!

Cognitive diversity is the most substantial benefit of our different viewpoints. Individually, we may see a few pixels, but when we collaborate with other perspectives, we begin to see them in high definition. The various perspectives often trigger our creative juices, especially while defending a position. The Full Range Leadership Model has a part of Transformational Leadership called Intellectual Stimulation. Abraham Lincoln leveraged this skill by exploiting the opposing views of cabinet members. He’d listen to the opposite sides of an issue, extract relevant wisdom, and decide.

Engineering problems faced today are multi-faceted. For example, the receiver in a wireless handset requires expertise of RF circuits, antennas, signal processing, networking protocols, digital interfaces, etc. To solve a problem like de-sensitization of the receiver in the presence of strong interferers, an optimum solution cannot be just in RF circuits or antennas (my domain) but at system level with a holistic view involving engineers from multiple domains. This was the subject of one of my patent applications where my collaborators involved 5 engineers in total from firmware, signal processing and with me (RF) taking the lead. An idea for extending the design to other scenarios came from the junior most member. Nobody is dispensible.

Failure is an opportunity to learn the gaps in one's work. It cannot be learnt without trials. It is essential to adopt a limited trial and error approach, but with caution. While pursuing PhD, I had intended to publish a specific wireless transceiver architecture, for which I had to conduct a few experimental validations. Due to long lead time for one of the important components, I decided to make it in my workshop. Unfortunately, the performance was worse than expected due to fabrication tolerances. I couldn't submit my paper before deadline. But, understanding the cause of that bad performance gave me an idea about how that aspect could be used for another purpose where I deliberately distort my signal of interest leading to a patent.

Perfectionism is the enemy of swift execution. Years ago, I was working on a major project for my Air Force unit, and the commander questioned me on its’ status. I told him I wanted to perfect the product. He said, “70 percent of something is better than 100 percent of nothing. Release it, and we can perfect it.” General George Patton echoed, “A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.” What we will release now will set the stage for the next iteration. If I initially fail. Oh, well! Farmers take the manure from their animals and convert it into fertilizer. My failures are the fertilizer for my future growth because I process them correctly.

Una estrategia nos puede servir: buscar un momento DIVERGENTE en donde todos ponen propuestas encima dela mesa (Brainstorm), para proseguir por una fase CONVERGENTE en donde se seleccionan las mejores ideas por consenso para llevarlas a cabo. Need is the mother of invention and therefore, a constraint can be a motivation. While pursuing PhD,my project was aimed at developing wideband wireless transceiver architectures. The instrument available in my lab then was constrained in bandwidth to measure the parameters of the wideband signal generated by my transmitter. I could not afford to wait until the new wide bandwidth instrument was delivered to my lab 60 days later. I developed a novel scheme to receive and measure wideband signals using multiple receivers of lower bandwidths while trying to measure my transmitters output signal in parts using the available equipment. This novel scheme enabled reuse of legacy narrowband RF hardware for next generation wideband communications.

Por incrível que pareça, quanto maior for a restrição, melhor será o resultado, pois se o escopo for muito amplo a criatividade acabará se perdendo no meio do processo. Exemplo: tente pensar num novo produto que utilize energia solar. Você perderá muito tempo imaginando cenários e possíveis soluções que ao final muito provavelmente não servirão para nada. Agora, pense num produto que utilize energia solar para ser usado em motocicletas que seja recarregado em menos X horas, que não custe mais que 1% do valor da moto, etc... Ou seja, quanto mais restrições, mais a sua cabeça trabalhará na direção certa e de forma criativa ( e muitas vezes inovadora) para resolver um problema real.

You can't build without tools and materials. 1. Inputs matter. Consume a diverse mix of inputs and you come up with a diverse mix of ideas. Listen to different music types and podcasts. Read nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. Follow people with different viewpoints. Don't allow your inputs to too narrowly define your thinking. 2. Have great conversations. Who do you talk to regularly? Great conversations with a diverse mix of people allow you to see things differently. It's not about agreeing or disagreeing, it's about broadening your perspective. 3. Make time to think. You can only consume so much before you need to think. Reflect on your conversations. Journal about what you've read. Try things on in your mind first.
