We examined 108 AI-based design papers from peer-reviewed journals and conferences, mapping their contributions to five stages of the engineering design process and categorizing seven AI-based methods. Our study shows that most AI-based design research focuses on the conceptual and preliminary design stages. This is due to the iterative nature of tasks, the availability of open design data, and the use of AI for computationally intensive tasks.
