This may be the MOST important.. as a Environmental Health and Safety Scientist I talk about qualified safety professionals ALL THE TIME. As in many industries it's not what you know but who you know. It's hard to get hired when your Director of Safety has less experience & college degrees than you. Opportunity & privilege also elevate "those in the know". Most who do what I do, have a certificate in safety, if that. If you don't know people it's incredibly difficult to find equity in the consulting field. Network, network, NETWORK! A few weeks ago I walked up and down Broadway giving out business cards because it seems dedicated qualified safety professionals aren't onsite for these live shows. I may not get contacted but I had to try.

It’s a bit of an IOU and sometimes you don’t get anything in return but it also spreads your name and reputation. Mutuals keep the industry running. I’m also not afraid to talk to someone no matter who they are. I’ve reached out to chairs of major studios. Know your worth and what you bring to the table.

There are always overlooked approaches and areas left unexplored. As a film consultant I specialise in helping documentary filmmakers become unstuck. Far too many experts will offer general advice without spending the time to listen and assess what is creating the situation for this specific project. Then you need to explore all the options in and outside the box for the situation, and also the level of alignment of these options to the filmmakers’ hopes for their film. This is one of the reasons I describe myself as a troubleshooting producer.

Specializing in one area of the filmmaking leads you to the mastering the trade. While gaining real life hands on experience in your niche you learn in deep all in and outs of it. When consulting others you will be able to provide compelling advice as a master of your trade. When consulting you can't be generic and vague, that would be a disservice. Being a master in your area will bring you more quality clients who seek an expert consultation.

I believe it’s the way you stand your ground. For me I am distributing and executive producing co-productions English projects with USA/France + other countries and completely French productions as well. Why? Because nobody from Hollywood is doing it. I have been in the game here for almost 4 years now. I rather be the first here than the 1000th in LA. It’s important to predict the future of the industry via the news and the history from before and use that as your way to find your niche. I am the go to expert here in Paris and it’s been a blast. According to my experience, I consider that specializing is a plus in the audiovisual world, since, for example, I work a lot as a sound engineer, and obtaining enough knowledge in that area can allow me to develop in different types of productions, short films, documentaries, animation, music, among other things. The ideal would be to try other types of different productions to be able to further develop your skills and at the same time continue training in your area of interest.

Picking a niche can feel limiting, especially for multihyphenates like me, but it's extremely beneficial. It helps you focus, make progress, and increases your chances of getting hired, which builds your network and showcases your other skills. Great advice I received was to present myself as a "tile expert" instead of saying I can remodel your house. If someone needs their tiles fixed, fix the tiles first, & in so doing people will see you can handle more. In film, these "tile" jobs also help build your community because you are working with other filmmakers. For me, I also focussed my niche on MUSICAL films which gives me specificity in my answers about my work and therefore creates quicker connections with those who share my interests.

This is absolutely helpful. I generally try to check in on film/tv/movie news, weekend box office, festival buzz, etc... but also don't get sucked in too deep where it becomes a form of procrastination from the work you have to put into your own projects. I also strongly encourage everyone to stay updated on filmmaking trends on social. From YouTube to IG to TikTok, I find it's important to be aware of how the video medium continues to evolve and how the next generation is exploring it in these new mediums. The filmmakers who have the longest careers, generally surround themselves with younger collaborators as they get older, and I think that is a very important way to stay updated, hip, curious, creative, and connected to the audience.

Film production consulting? I that is very specialized go sit next to the line producer and follow them around. I wouldn't worry about trying on each and every hat. Grip/electric is a good place to get in your set hours because they are the marines for the motion picture industry. They are involved in every shot . If you go Camera dept and you're any good go ahead and become a DP it will take longer to arrive bit it's a very rewarding job and it pays well. I should have stayed in the Camera Dept. Grip/ Electric is the place to see all the action and the prerigg and strike will aid your perspective on costs and overruns , how that affects the process. To be a consultant you need some years in production and on the set.

Do not try to be everybody's friend. Be friendly, respectful, keep your focus on the job. I made the mistake of wanting to do all the latter as well as being everybody's friend. I wound up being a chuckle head on sets sometimes which angers producers. You wont get called back or respected. Don't be a hard a$$ either, be respectful even to those under you.
