There is a subtle but important difference between people's articulated goals and actual needs. For instance, a leader may be negotiating terms but actually concerned about how the final result will make them look. So their articulated goal might be a certain financial agreement but their quiet need is to walk away from the negotiation with a strong reputation. To get that person on your side in that negotiation, you need to take care of their quiet need as much as their articulated goal.

I partially disagree, as I believe objectives focus on ourselves and our perspective and will align us to have a fixed mindset as to what we expect, against actual market offerings, the perceived value of the customer in his mind and the actual value based on the current cost to the customer. When we go with set objectives, we will be focusing on winning the negotiation, instead of making our customer feel that he is paying for something that has real value and that he is paying a price which is fair. As someone who is very introspective and appreciates time to think and process, it’s hard being put on the spot when emotions are heightened.
