Here's how you can master new programming languages for computer graphics.

Always keep in mind that the software you are using is a tool. Unless you aim to have a technical role such as a pipeline TD, see the software, whichever it is, as a means to achieve what you or the client has in mind and not the final goal.

What I've seen is that the world of computer graphics is ever-evolving and mastering new programming languages can significantly enhance your capabilities so you have to define your objectives and establish a realistic timeline. Research and select languages relevant to your interests, e.g. C++, Python, GLSL, or HLSL. Utilise online courses, books, and official documentation. Start with simple projects, participate in coding challenges, and collaborate on open-source projects. Seek mentorship, attend webinars, and join study groups. Develop debugging skills, optimise your code, and regularly review and refactor. Follow blogs, forums, and read research papers to stay informed. Document your projects on GitHub and network with professionals.

I would say that the programming language is not nearly as important as choosing the right technology/API to focus on (e.g. OpenGL, Vulkan, ect.). For a skilled programmer, learning a new language is the trivial part. Conversely, leaning something like a new game engine, is no joke and is definitely an investment that should be chosen wisely.

For those most afraid I even recommend starting by simply replicating something you've seen or following a tutorial. That is what helped me the most in the beginning in learning the logic of a specific language! At first following along the tutorial, then as I gained in confidence only looking for the steps to achieve and checking only when my code didn't work. Overtime you build confidence and skill. And I always remember that there is as much ways of programming as there is programmers!

If you are struggling to find interesting projects to work on, participating in game jams with friends (or even strangers) can be a great place to start. This can really help jumpstart the learning process in a fun way. I've personally had a number of game jams turn into long term projects that are now porfolio material.

I took a while to graduate with a BS in computer science. I got my MS when older and was able to accomplish this in 3 years and had one B and the rest A`s. I contracted kidney disease after graduation and after recieving a kidney transplant was looking to put my education to use. I stated looking into video games and found plenty of examples on You Tube. I practiced until feeling comfortable with games. I have a 6 month internship making a spy game with Dovelp and another 6 to 8 months working at P1 Virtual civilization as a volunteer. The more I learn the better at graphics and visuals I become.

I started working at P1 Virtual Civlization in Oct of 23 and have been able to learn more about gaming and game making. Sam Martin asked me what I wanted to do as far as the P1 was concerned. i had done work in programming mostly C# and Unity. He suggested at the end of the conversation that I do what I am good at which is User Interface. I started my first VR project on a game called Eco Defender.
