When you receive difficult feedback, your first reaction might be to justify your actions or your organization's approach. Instead, pause and really listen. By giving the person providing feedback your full attention, you let them know that you hear their concerns and appreciate their input. You don't have to agree with everything they say, but by listening, you create a space for open conversation and show respect for their perspective.

While seeking feedback from peers on your performance, goals, and challenges is invaluable, it’s essential to do so with genuine curiosity and a readiness to improve. Asking from a place of genuine curiosity ensures that the feedback you receive is honest and actionable, rather than just confirmation of what you want to hear. This approach helps you identify your strengths, areas for improvement, and blind spots. Gather input from colleagues, mentors, partners, and clients through various methods like surveys, assessments, or 360-degree reviews, and use this feedback to grow and adapt effectively.

It's important to stay calm and know that any critical feedback is not meant to be a personal attack. The feedback is meant to make you and your organization better. As an auditor, I've provided feedback to countless organizations. Many times there are opportunities for improvement. Those who stay calm, listen to the advice, and try to implement it come out ahead. I can remember a handful of times where the feedback was not received so well and was perceived as a personal attack, and responded with a lack of professionalism. Those individuals were not around for very long afterwards. Stay professional. Assume positive intent. Focus on getting better every day.
