Don’t be shy to ask about the diversity of the team collecting the data, creating the AI models, testing, and post production (AI model data drift) There are studies that prove the more diverse the team, the higher the confidence in reducing bias through the end to end process lifecycle.

For groups to be able to fight bias in Artificial Intelligence systems, the first thing they have to do is know if it exists. Bias can come from different sources in AI like training data, algorithms and assumptions made during model development. Firstly, there is a need for teams to evaluate datasets for irregularities or omissions. A serious apprehension is such as lack of adequate representation among some groups in the training dataset. Biased training data used by facial recognition systems has historically caused them not to work well on non-white faces showing the need for wide-range and representative data sets.

AI systems learn from the data they are trained with. If the data is not diverse, the AI's behavior is limited, the decision is biased and it is not applicable to other situations or groups. Most probably you get an AI not fully working in 100% of the cases.

Often AI is incorporated into decision engines, but there is more to decisions than being data-driven often. There may be rules that need to be followed, or actions that need to be taken even if not successful for different legal reasons. It can be hard to steer this by data, but additional business rules can solve that.

🔸Some amount of past experience is required to normalise the biases in the output. 🔸Have experienced resources in the team who have 'done it ealrier' to guide others. 🔸Involve experts to guide through the bias elimination process.

Additional challenges we will continue to experience is software & services companies selling with the emphasis of using AI technologies. Several questions you can ask: 1. What problem being solved with the use of AI? 2. Show me where AI is being used? 3. Show me your fact sheet - what assumptions were made with training data, coverage, and assumptions which may have led to extrapolations. 4. How are the models tested? What procedures do you have in place during testing. 5. How often to do revisit the models after they are first used by the public? At minimum, these 5 questions will either provide comfort, concerns, or assist in follow up discussions.

I had some experiences about this topic. These are my learnings. 1) Diverse Team: Build diverse teams to tackle bias from different angles. 2) Collaboration: Work together to identify and mitigate bias throughout the AI development process. 3) Bias Detection: Task teams with actively seeking out bias in data and algorithms. 4) Inclusive Data: Involve diverse stakeholders in data collection. 5) Transparency: Discuss algorithmic decisions openly. 6) Continuous Evaluation: Monitor AI systems for bias regularly. 7) Ethics Training: Educate team members on ethical implications and bias mitigation. 8) Through teamwork, organizations can address bias in AI effectively.

This article calls for overcoming bias, yet even in that call, bias exists. There can be a bias towards logic, professionalism, optimism, acceptance of AI. In our current society and on LinkedIn these seem to be acceptable biases. So clearly not all biases are there to be overcome. Choosing our biases, well, as humans we do that every day. Interesting that we expect a total lack of bias from AI.

Identification of bias is essential to address it. It is only when the area responsible for bias is identified, measures to overcome the same like creeation of synthetic data to neutralize can be applied.
