In the era of disruptive technology, it is essential for managers to possess a foundational understanding of the tools and gadgets related to digital learning. In large organizations, adopting new digital learning tools and gadgets is not straightforward. Therefore, managers should be well-versed in conducting comparative analyses of these tools to make informed recommendations, considering cost factors and the need for multiple approvals.

As a manager in digital learning, it is imperative to stay on top of the latest and greatest. Even if your team is using an outdated software, it’s important to try out the newest to be able to compare and contrast. You have to be able to have those discussions with your team and know what they are talking about and understand their perspective, not just hear it.

A typical requirement for effective leadership is to lead by example. Being familiar with the tools and able to complete tasks goes a long way in building teams and leading the team instead of managing the team.

There are multiple channels available to foster communication within a team, but the real challenge lies in aligning, organizing, and presenting all information in a specific order to ensure it remains useful and not just raw data. Utilizing shared folders on the cloud for organized information, setting up email and WhatsApp groups with proper guidelines, and conducting daily or weekly briefings can significantly enhance communication harmony among team members.

I like to use varied means of communication with my team. They know they can text me, call me, or email me based on their comfort level. I also try and check in when I can to ensure an across the board understanding and to keep the team on a consistent and level playing field.

As a manager, you need to become the leader and decrease the amount of managing you do. Your team members are your most powerful resource. Like any resources, you need to protect it. Supporting well being is a part of protecting the resource. Also team members who can tell you honestly support and care about their wellbeing are more willing to accept leadership from you.
