From my perspective following things to be work upon 1) Improve your core mechanical skills 2) Be a team player 3) Get exposure of electrical and instrument discipline also 4) Work upon your project management skills 5) Beef up your communication skills And last but not the least always make your boss look good.

In my experience, the key to excelling as a mechanical engineer lies in mastering core competencies like mechanics, thermodynamics, material science, and fluid dynamics. To propel your career, set specific goals and deadlines. Dedicate weekly hours to study and practice, focusing on a specialization. Utilize online courses, workshops, and hands-on projects to ensure not just familiarity but proficiency in applying these concepts to real-world problems. Consistent effort in these areas will significantly enhance your expertise and career trajectory.

I will do it by setting clear, doable goals. Get certified and take advanced courses. I will also try working on projects and internships for experience and connect with industry pros.

Mastery in the fields of mechanics, fluid dynamics, materials and thermodynamic is highly important. I would add: strength of materials and vibrations analysis, even if they are considered parts of mechanics, they have deep repercussions in what we design, build, or use in everyday life, therefore (they) deserve special attention. As mechanical engineering has such a wide base of applications, an experienced engineer will run in these domains with every important project they are part of, especially as design engineers.

We are life long learners. It is important for our careers, our success on the job, and for our general bellying/brain health. I am using this opportunity to make a plea: After graduation from college or university, it is very difficult to upgrade or maintain your skills, if your employer doesn’t use specialized software programs. I am thinking about CAD programs and FEA analysis software. If we make the time to learn, upgrade, or maintain specialized knowledge, leasing such programs is very expensive, and IMAO we should “open the gates” to knowledge.

Commit to lifelong learning by setting annual goals for professional development. Pursue advanced certifications, learn new software tools, and stay updated with emerging trends through journals and publications. Allocate time each month to enhance your knowledge and skills, ensuring you remain relevant and competitive.

I personally learned a lot in soft skills through becoming a Scrum Master. Another area of improvement for me is: Communications Management. While soft skills make or break a deal, and we should strive to continuously learn and improve, my personal biggest progress came through learning and practicing Scrum.

Technical expertise alone isn't enough; soft skills are equally vital. Set goals to improve communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Take courses on leadership or practice public speaking. Establish milestones and assess your progress regularly to become a well-rounded professional.

In my experience, maintaining a detailed record of your goals, progress, and accomplishments can be incredibly beneficial. It helps you stay focused, provides motivation, and serves as a valuable tool during performance reviews or job interviews.
