I don't consider myself as a "leader" at machine learning. But regardless here's my opinion on how and in which direction would you want to expand yourself in to become a leader in the exact field of your choice. I will take examples from my own experiences here: 1. Know the basics: You should start from the scratch and know the math and logic behind the most basic ML algos you learn. ( Andrew NG's course for ML & DL is highly recommend ) 2. Chose 1 path at a time: There are multiple fields to explore in ML, in my case I explored Computer Vision and Deep Learning through internships & even managed to publish 2 research papers 3. Deep Dive: if you like learning about the path you chose, work on it further and learn more about it.

With rapid technological advancements, the advent of GenAI, complexity of AI/ML capabilities and the need for governance overlay is paramount to be addressed by a leader in the field. That would eventually enable a stronger and mature AI risk culture as a part of the ERM framework.

These days, many ML engineers neglect basic coding practices. I think it's high time MLEs start exploring the Software Development side of things & become better engineers. I myself have experience both in the field of software development & machine learning. Back in 2023, when I was browsing through all of the GSOC organisations, I came across "Ivy", which is a YC backed startup on a mission to unify all ML frameworks. It was the perfect organisation for me as it had both SDE & ML related work. The most challenging part about it was that it itself was a python framework and I had to understand their huge repository within 2 weeks. But still I managed to make 2 PRs. If you're an undergrad, then here's my advice for you. I personally did not follow the usual path like the others by solving DSA problems. I started from scratch from interning at startups to publishing research papers & working at unicorns. The one thing I did differently was that in all my internships, I picked up a different role. I gained experience in ML, DL, backend development, system design, DevOps, & SRE. You can look at my profile to see how I progressed through my career & made internship choices. The point here is that I professionally explored all these fields. Now, I can choose which field to finally pursue as a full-time employee with an open mind. So, explore everything & then decide if you really like it or not.
