I personally look at analytical skills and ask for mathematics score in standard 10 and 12th and if they are graduates their maths score. Second I ask if they did internal projects on their own or it was done in the team. If in the team, what was their role. Last I ask, if you were not to be a developer, what was your other goal.

You can use the hands-on-labs in your CV as they showcase your ability to put into practice what you have learnt. Skills or competences can then be referenced as projects. Also try to tell a story about how you succeeded/failed.
